AB will be celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month Belgium is hosting the 7th edition of their multidisciplinary festival in March. AB is joining this celebration of the power and richness of our country’s black communities. Both organisations will aim to shine a spotlight on the diversity, creativity and resilience of black communities with a musical programme.

March is right around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: Black History Month Belgium. AB is proud to renew its intensive collaboration with this multidisciplinary socio-cultural festival for the fourth time.

B(l)ack to Our Roots, the theme of the festival’s 7th edition, invites you to explore the heritage, identity and wisdom passed down through the generations. The topic also marks a return to the original mission of Black History Month Belgium: to celebrate the diversity, creativity and resilience of black communities. AB is hosting five events within this theme.

On 14 March, AB and Black History Month Belgium will hold a talk with project and artist manager Selene Alexa (Yseult, Black Mamba, Gayance, Marta Da’ro). She will share her expertise on artist development and provide insights and strategies for up-and-coming black artists. This will be followed by a panel discussion on how to build up a meaningful public presence within the Belgian music industry as a black artist.

Two days later, AB will host Rumba Divas, a concept by Belgian-Congolese filmmaker Monique Mbeka Phoba in the musical style recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. This concert will honour the rich heritage of the great female voices in Congolese Rumba, such as Jolie Detta, Mbilia Bel and Abeti.

Jabanè Sessions 6, curated by Bona Léa on 21 March, will round off AB’s celebration of Black History Month. The Brussels DJ will regale us with a club night (AB at Night) after joining STACE for a bespoke Songwriting workshop earlier that day.
