Album out now: The Avalanches "No Bad Memories"

On their fourth album No Bad Memories, The Avalanches explore the magical intersection of advertising, memory and nostalgia, examining how jingles, sonic logos, commercials and the sounds of technology quietly embed themselves in our lives, becoming inseparable from the memories they soundtrack. Turning this forgotten ephemera into something warm, euphoric and deeply human, the album reframes corporate sonic identifiers as joyous portals into childhood and collective memory.

It’s a characteristically kaleidoscopic Avalanches world, teeming with warm voices, some sampled, others from an extraordinary cast including Karen O, John Glacier and Rivers Cuomo. Prodigious collaborators & producers familiar with a joyous dancefloor Barry Can’t Swim, Jamie XX, Loaded Honey; some themselves virtuosos at working with a similar kind of digital debris, such as glitchtronica pioneer Ryoji Ikeda, audacious producer & multi-instrumentalist Portraits Of Tracy, Yellow Magic Orchestra founder Haruomi Hosono and Tunisian footwork maverick Khadija Al Hanafi. Others, like electronic composer Suzanne Ciani, helped define the very sonic language of modern advertising through their pioneering work creating audio identities for companies including Coca-Cola and Atari.

At once playful, emotional and conceptually ambitious, No Bad Memories explores what happens when the disposable sounds of consumer culture become some of the most enduring memories we carry with us.

“Our album No Bad Memories is out in the world today. We're beyond grateful for the endless enthusiasm and love our music receives after all this time. Thank you for taking the time to listen, we hope you enjoy it! ”

The Avalanches

Built around an instantly infectious soul sample, I Give Everything I Have 2 U (feat. Loaded Honey) is a joyous, emotionally charged centerpiece of the new record, perfectly encapsulating the album’s fascination with the way fragments of sound can take on entirely new meanings over time. The release is accompanied by a music video starring Haley Joel Osment, shot on location in Tokyo by acclaimed cinematographer Andrés Arochi (Long Legs), adding another vivid and unexpected dimension to the visual world of No Bad Memories.

“Working with our friend Haley on the visual for this song was such a thrill. A one-take scenario with Haley trying to navigate the Shibuya traffic, a huge camera strapped to the outside of his windshield is not a bad memory indeed! ”
