Alt-pop riser Jack Kane captures quiet sting of heartbreak on ‘Loving You (Is A Drag)’. New EP 'Obvious' out 24th October

Hertfordshire alt-pop songwriter Jack Kane has a knack for slipping the cinematic into the everyday, transforming overheard confessions and awkward moments into immersive pop. Today he announces new EP 'Obvious - out 24th October via MADE Music and releases new single 'Loving You (Is A Drag)' - a song that reframes cheating not as a simple act of villainy, but as a messy, human byproduct of love gone stale.

'Loving You (Is A Drag)' was written with and produced by BLUEGIRL (Millie Turner, Déyyess) at her London studio, and follows Kane's recently released single 'Breaking Up At The Department Store'.

Channelling the narrative detail of Paul Simon’s verse writing, but swerving unexpectedly into a chorus Kane describes as “leaning into a 1975’y avenue I haven’t poked my head into before... it’s really fun" - 'Loving You (Is A Drag)' marries low-lit, conversational verses with a rush of widescreen colour, threading jangling acoustic guitars through glassy synths and a neon-lit pop snap.

“I think cheating is usually painted as black and white – whoever cheats is the villain – but it’s obviously more nuanced than that,” says Kane. “In this case, it’s because loving their partner has become ‘a drag’.”

Raised in Hertfordshire on a diet of Beatles records from his Liverpudlian dad and Chaka Khan anthems from his North London-born mum, Kane grew up in a house where music was always playing - literally the soundtrack to family life.

That lived-in relationship with sound has shaped an artist intent on crafting music that will mean something a decade from now: “I’m tired of seeing everything boiled down to instant gratification,” he says. “I only want to release songs that will mean something to me in 10 years from now.”

That long-game approach runs through upcoming EP 'Obvious', which Kane has pieced together with a cast of close collaborators including Mark Elliot, Toni Howard, Odd Martin, Hoost, and Ed Denholm. Some of the songs were born in spontaneous ‘flow’ sessions - full improvisations later sculpted into fully-fledged tracks - giving them a looseness and immediacy that contrasts with Kane’s meticulous lyrical detail.

With a burgeoning fanbase, Jack Kane recently wrapped his debut UK & Ireland tour, playing to packed rooms in Glasgow, Dublin, London, Manchester and Bristol, following appearances at Neighbourhood Festival, Barn On The Farm, BST Hyde Park and more. Elsewhere he was recently invited to support AURORA in Dublin, following previous dates supporting Arthur Hill, Eloise, Will Joseph Cook and more.

With his blend of intimate confessionals, pop smarts, and live-wire performance energy, Jack Kane is quietly building something meant to last.
