Ammonite shares debut track 'You Don't Know Me'

Ransom Note Records is delighted to welcome Ammonite to the fold with “You Don’t Know Me”. The track is taken from the songwriter-producer Amy Spencer’s debut full-length release, Blueprints, which explores two opposing sound worlds: the voice and technology. Where layers of improvised vocals meet electronic processing and flow like a glorious, glitchy, blue river.

Though a proficient singer-songwriter and a guest vocalist for Bicep (penning two tracks on their debut album), TVAM, DC Gore and Motsa, like many women in music, she experienced ‘imposter syndrome’ within male-dominated environments and preferred to leave others to produce. But with Ammonite, Spencer decided to try something new – she left behind songwriting rules and ideas of what production should be, to unlock harmony and melodies she hadn’t accessed before, creating fragments of self-reflective lyrics, drones of humming vowels and broken repetitive words to construct her seven-track release.

For Blueprints, Spencer was inspired by artists and producers working with limitations (Burial, Laurel Halo, Kali Malone), as well as by nearby walks along the River Thames in Deptford where she’s based. She found that the patterns in the river resembled a burst of cloud, a painting, or even a fossil, which later became a focal point of the artwork and visuals by Yasmin Vardi. Together, the two female artists have created a synthesised world that draws on the movement of water, cyborg feminism, shades of blue, past present and future.

Blueprints doesn’t just represent the title of Spencer’s new release, but the literal foundations, a new outlook and a brand new chapter for the artist. Throughout the release, Spencer showcases vulnerability and strength. Her music is close up and intimate, yet distant and reflective like it’s from another time, floating in the atmosphere between space and earth. It's both organic and man-made. Neither right nor wrong; human or machine; masculine or feminine.

Ammonite - a fossil, a unique and ancient artefact. Like the voice, there’s no fossil quite the same, each one has its own intricate lines and curves, and every one of them tells a different story. Ammonite is also the new project from songwriter-producer Amy Spencer. Debut full length release Blueprints explores two opposing sound worlds, the voice and technology. For several years, Spencer studied music and learnt production techniques, but she often shied away from using them to finalise her compositions. Though a well-versed singer-songwriter, and a guest vocalist for the likes of Bicep (penning two tracks on their debut album), TVAM, Junk Son, and Motsa, like many women in music and other creative fields, she would experience ‘imposter syndrome’ within male-dominated environments and preferred to leave others to produce and sign off on the finished product.

Spencer was ready to try something new after so much time spent feeling this way. She experimented by singing sounds and words into the mic, cutting up vocal samples and layering them at random, slowly unravelling a unique way to create and produce music with just her voice and electronic processing. Through this exploration, Spencer left behind songwriting rules and unlocked harmony and melodies she hadn’t accessed before. Fragments of self-reflective lyrics, drones of humming vowels and broken repetitive words construct her seven-track release titled Blueprints.
