Armlock Share New Single/Video "Half Time" Out Today Via Run For Cover Records

Armlock, the up-and-coming Australian indie rock duo of Simon Lam and Hamish Mitchell, have shared their new single "Half Time" out today via Run For Cover Records.

In 2024 the band released their album, Seashell Angel Lucky Charm, and drew attention from the likes of Stereogum, The FADER, BrooklynVegan, FLOOD Magazine, Paste Magazine, Bandcamp Daily, and more. Since then Armlock have been staying busy, releasing a new single "Strobe" in 2025, touring with Snail Mail (who recently sang their praises), and selling out their NYC headliner at Union Pool. Now they're back with "Half Time" another cut of uniquely minimalist yet deeply immersive indie rock that is sure to sound great live at the band's upcoming shows supporting The Belair Lip Bombs in North America.

Armlock discussed the new songs and video saying:

"'Half Time' is mostly trying to describe the gap between existing and feeling. ‘Tell me how to hear it’ became a central lyric, treating emotion as an elusive frequency I’m trying to hear but can’t quite tap into. It’s not meant to be a sad song, it’s more anchored in the frustration of trying to extract more from every passing moment and wanting to feel what’s under the surface.

We recorded the song in our usual way in our own studios, chopping and changing as we go. Pieces recorded in different tempos and sometimes different keys. You’re listening to version 1 and version 50 at the same time. Demo memos and final takes live together in the master. Once again we got Geography and Juice Webster to jump in on the backing vocals. The video for ‘Half Time' was made with Tom Dunphy and Bridgette Winten. It was important to us that the video had a lot of colour, in reference to the lyric ‘just another rainbow.’ We shot everything in double time with quite a lot of over-the-top energy, though when we play it back in half time it looks pretty subdued, which is kind of perfect for the meaning of the track."

Longtime friends and collaborators, Lam (vocals and guitar) and Mitchell (guitar and keyboards) met studying jazz at Monash University in Melbourne, eventually discovering a shared love of electronic music. After a handful of electronic and dance-oriented projects (I’lls, Couture, Kllo) Armlock began in earnest and the two musicians began incorporating guitar into the songs they were making for the first time. Their debut Trust was released in 2021 and laid the groundwork for their imaginative and sonically rich sound, at times recalling Pinback’s lean alternative, Alex G’s adventurous indie, or the wave of mysterious-yet-endearing genre-bending music coming out of the UK from label’s like Dean Blunt’s World Music or Vegyn’s PLZ Make It Ruins. Armlock's second album Seashell Angel Lucky Charm introduced the group to the broader indie world and now "Strobe" and "Half Time" hint at what's to come from the duo.
