Baby Snakes & The Electric Co. make their debut with "Dark Horse", music made without hands and with extra grit

Today, Baby Snakes & The Electric Co., the indie/alternative solo project of producer and Modern Electric Sound Recorders founder Jeff Saenz, officially announce their debut with Ouroboros, a record that sheds its multi-layered skin to reveal a solid steel heart. Repurposing the mythical symbol of the snake eating its tail, the new album, out October 23 via Spaceflight Records, breaks Saenz free from the cycle of the music industry and the endless loop of production work, only to re-emerge as a solo artist with a strong point of view, a passion for creation, and a riveting story to tell.

Saenz also shares "Dark Horse", the lead single from Ouroboros. Originally written as a last-minute melody hummed into his phone from the shower before the session that day, what was once an off-the-cuff thought transformed into an uplifting rock anthem about endurance, hope, and resilience. Written and recorded in just two days, it adheres as much as possible to the live-in-studio ethos, only adding a dash of tambourine and some harmonies to round it out, giving that classic rock 'n' roll sound an arena rock energy.

"This song is about hitting the gas through tragedy, because sometimes the only way out is through," adds Saenz. "Built from the fire you find yourself in after the smoke clears, it’s the moment you look your person in the eye and decide: are we in this together? The answer is an emphatic yes. Take that love and move forward; a clearing always awaits."

He notes the song's simplicity in construction. "As would become the trend," he adds, "we wrote it on day one, tracked it on day two, and hit the overdubs on day three. Aside from maybe some tambourines and harmonies, that’s what you’re hearing when you listen to 'Dark Horse.'"

Atwood Magazine who debuted the single, says, "Saenz writes with the force of a man spilling his raw self into song, wearing his heart on his sleeve while the band builds around him in surging waves of grit and grace," adding, "That’s what makes “Dark Horse” such a stirring first statement. It doesn’t flatten survival into inspiration or romance into fantasy; it lets both feel alive, complicated, and beautifully unfinished. In Saenz’s world, rock ‘n’ roll becomes a vehicle for belief itself – a way of taking everything life has thrown at you, everything love has asked of you, and turning it into forward motion."

Jeff Saenz has lived several musical lives. He came up playing in punk bands, toured with his heroes, moved through the punk, rock, alternative country, and Americana scenes, and spent years as the kind of player, producer, and collaborator who could make himself useful in almost any room. In Dallas, Saenz built Modern Electric Sound Recorders into far more than a studio. It became a home base, a meeting ground, and a creative engine for a North Texas scene that includes artists like Leon Bridges, Paul Cauthen, Joshua Ray Walker, and the Vandoliers, just to name a few.

Fast forward to nearly 10 years after opening the studio, when on June 1, 2021, Saenz suffered a near-fatal accident that led to the amputation of both his hands. Making this record was one of the largest commitments of his life: he aimed to prove to himself that he could still make music after such tragedy. Every physical way of playing an instrument was taken — guitar, bass, drums, keys — but he needed to prove to himself that he could still translate his vision. With a relentless persistence and many thanks to some very talented friends, his renewed love for singing (and playing piano with a rubber-tipped stylus) yielded much more than he could’ve anticipated. Not willing to surrender to any sort of post traumatic default, he constantly strives to keep as much of his of his pre-accident self intact: to brush his own teeth, fold his own laundry, drive his kids to school and make their lunch, even wear the leather belts, jeans, and boots he always wore. He may call it stubbornness, but it translates as strength.

For years, Jeff Saenz poured a producer's energy into other artists. With Ouroboros, he turns that focus inward.

Ouroboros pays homage to 2025, one of the most challenging years for Saenz, as well as the Year of the Snake, according to the Chinese Zodiac. Born under the same sign in 1977, the artist found himself once again shedding his skin, growing through pain, and confronting both comforting and frightening memories before finally moving forward. Ouroboros presents 12 new songs: each representing one month of the calendar year, chronologically guiding the listener through emotional storms and dedications of love for his wife and children, all before guiding them to the warm light of clarity, the trials of mental health, and finally to inner peace. He wrote each song spontaneously, reigniting a fiery passion for songwriting by penning lyrics and the songs that hold them in little more than a single day, piecing them together the very next, one song a month for one whole year.

"2025 was finding the clearing after all of the smoke, only to find myself back in the fire," says Saenz. "This album could not be sequenced any other way than chronologically. To do so would be to disgrace the process of that Year of the Snake. To disgrace the death, the rebirth, the letting go, the holding on, the end, and the beginning. The cycle... the renewal. Ouroboros is that story. It’s my story. It’s everyone’s story, in one way or another."

With Ouroboros, Baby Snakes & The Electric Co. turn that belief into something loud, lived-in, and lasting: Rock ‘n’ roll as an act of will, and a reminder that even after everything changes, your story isn’t finished.
