Belle Scar - 'Overwhelmed' : first single from upcoming new album by boldly captivating singer-songwriter out 23rd April 2026

Belle Scar is a captivating and bold singer-songwriter, producer and artistic director originally from Montreal but now based in London. Described by the New York Times as ‘a creature from another dimension, she’s phenomenal,’ her widely acclaimed 2023 album ‘Atoms’ was at times redolent of a Tim Burton film score and at others of a show tune mash-up between Shirley Bassey, David Bowie, Nina Simone, Nick Cave, Björk and Portishead.

Scar is currently recording a follow-up album, with ‘Overwhelmed’ released today as a first single from it. An empowering anthem, it sees her shift musical focus, eschewing her previously lush and cinematic swagger for a soulful sound influenced by the classic ‘60s/‘70s output of labels such as Stax and Motown, the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka The Swampers) and musician/producers such as Steve Cropper, Isaac Hayes, David Porter and Al Bell.

“Some might be surprised by the direction I have moved in, but anyone who truly knows me won’t,” explains Scar. “I always feel the need to explore new horizons and be true to what is inspiring me, looking forwards and letting the music come to me."

Upbeat and funky, ‘Overwhelmed’ stands in stark contrast to her previous output. “Life isn’t easy. We all try to get by, but sometimes we get overwhelmed and exhausted,” she continues. “This song is one that helps me get through challenging days, like a personal pep talk. This includes being the mother of a child with special needs and all the issues involved with that. It’s an honest song that I hope can motivate other people as well."

Scar’s live shows to promote ‘Scars’ took place at Sadler’s Wells and Hoxton Hall with a fourteen-piece band (including strings and choir), following which she was invited to appear at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the 2023 edition of the WOW Festival (Women of the World). Her busy schedule as a vocal coach (including conducting choirs and teaching belting/creative/vocal mindfulness masterclasses and workshops) has curtailed further live activity until now, but it has also allowed her time to reflect, write and record songs for her new album.

Finally ready to take the stage again, Scar has announced an album preview show at Kings Place on 21st May.
