Boston Post-Rockers Pray For Sound Premiere New Single "Spiral"!

"We want people to take away hope and happiness from this record", explains band founder and guitar player Bruce Malley. "We don’t want them to feel sadness and despair as is customary with much post-rock or instrumental music. We try to convey something positive."

The new nine-song album was self-produced and recorded and mixed at Kennedy Studios in Burlington, Mass. Music emits healing properties. Its reverberations and echoes double as emotional, spiritual, and even physical remedies. Without ever uttering a word, Pray For Sound channel this curative power through instrumental transmissions of lush post-rock, cinematic production, glistening synth pop, and organic tribal percussion. The Boston quartet fully realize the scope of that potential to heal on their independent fourth full-length, Waves.

Originally formed in 2011 as a solo project for Bruce, Pray For Sound’s origins can be directly connected to the founder’s own journey. Deaf in his left ear since high school, Bruce envisioned an architecture for sonic catharsis on 2012’s Monophonic. Joined by his bandmates around the same time, the group unlocked an inimitable chemistry, thriving on stage at countless East Coast shows and flourishing in the studio for 2014’s Dreamer. The latter yielded Sleeper which impressively clocked 4.5 million Spotify streams as Decayer followed with 230K. With the 2016 arrival of Everything Is Beautiful came further acclaim from all around the world. In 2018 the band released the experimental LP, Waiting Room. Furthermore in 2018, Pray For Sound dove into writing what would become Waves when a brutal back injury sidelined Nick throughout the creation. Facing this pain, it was a time of many struggles, but the writing process allowed him to ignore the pain: "I was trying to write songs to lift me up. I didn’t want to write something angry and relive the injury. The name Waves fit as we were going through these highs and lows together".

"It was an interesting perspective for me", says Bruce. "On the first album, I portrayed darkness and pain since I was frustrated with my deafness. On this album, I wanted Nick to feel better. I was able to overcome what I went through. It’s behind me at this point. I got the chance to help him. We were able to support one another."

In order to uplift, they brightened the sound by incorporating analog synths and drawing on a wider swath of inspirations, including The Naked & Famous, Vacationer, and The 1975. As a result, they encode subtle pop ambition within this virtuosic framework. "We all love good catchy melodies", Nick continues. "You should be able to hum these later after you hear them". The first single and opener All The Days cycles from guests of wind and shakers through bombastic percussion and airy delay before sweeping distortion takes hold. It culminates on a hummable riff. It lives up to the boys’ ambition to "start with a big momentous song". Meanwhile, the title track Waves employs "the heaviest synth influence", merging lo-fi techno stylings and robust rock in its elegant ebb and flow. Spiral tempers careful guitar with a prominent bass groove before another rush of energetic and kinetic playing. In the end, Pray For Sound offer a remedy like no other on Waves. "We just want listeners to enjoy this", Nick leaves off. "When they’re excited about our band, we feel really good. At the end of the day, all we can hope for is to share the same sentiment with others."
