'Changes: The Story of Sugar,' a 20-minute mini documentary chronicling Bob Mould’s band, to premiere August 6 on Youtube, with online fan afterparty to follow

U.S. leg of SUGAR's Love You Even Still World Tour begins in August, with a slew of sold-out dates and festival plays

On the heels of their first live shows together in decades, SUGAR is excited to share Changes: The Story of SUGAR, a 20-minute mini documentary chronicling the history of the band, from their first practice sessions in the early 90s to their three sold-out Webster Hall shows this past May. The documentary will debut on YouTube at 12 Noon ET, Thursday, August 6 and will be followed immediately by a YouTube online Afterparty with Bob Mould. Produced and directed by Rob Hatch-Miller (Other Music, Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows) and filmed entirely over the course of SUGAR’s run at Webster Hall, the documentary features archival footage, sit-down interviews with members Bob Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, snippets from Mould’s memoir, "See A Little Light: The Trail Of Rage And Melody,” and special guest appearances.

The film was edited by Greg King (The Elephant 6 Recording Co, Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History Of Gary Young & Pavement) and shot by cinematographer Paul Yee (Reality, Joy Ride), who has also previously collaborated with Hatch-Miller on music videos for the New Pornographers, Wild Flag, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Real Estate, Aimee Mann, Frankie Cosmos, and Titus Andronicus.

“It seems to have been one of the happiest eras of Bob's life,” said Hatch-Miller. “We found so much great archival footage, like Lance Bangs' never-before-seen video of the band's first show ever at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, footage of Bob's solo acoustic European festival tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana in 1991, and so many clips of Bob and the band on MTV's 120 Minutes, where they were so warmly embraced and brought to a mainstream television audience.”

As Mould says in the film, “I tend to be identified most with Hüsker Dü and my solo albums, but few know the half of how much fun I had with Sugar.”

With the triumphant European leg of their Love You Even Still World Tour wrapped up, the band is eagerly gearing up for their North American shows, which begin on August 11 in Denver and feature 24 dates across the U.S., including three sold out nights at First Avenue in Minneapolis MN and two shows at Union Transfer in Philadelphia PA, while also hitting Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C, Boston, New York, and Atlanta, with the final date being October 24 in Athens, GA. ABOUT SUGAR:

Having already placed his indelible mark on modern music with Hüsker Dü and solo album Workbook, Bob Mould enlisted bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis leading to the formation of SUGAR, who made their live debut in early 1992 at Athens, GA’s famed 40 Watt Club. Named by NME as its 1992 Album of the Year, SUGAR’s now-classic debut album, Copper Blue, immediately proved a sensation, earning worldwide acclaim and landmark status for the melodic strength and intensely cathartic popcraft of songs like “A Good Idea”, “Helpless”, and the alternative rock radio hit and MTV favorite, “If I Can’t Change Your Mind”. With the wind at their back, SUGAR unleashed Beaster in 1993, making a momentous debut at #4 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Though recorded during the same sessions that yielded Copper Blue, the six-song mini-album evinced a more visceral energy and dark melancholy than its predecessor, highlighted by such pulverising expressions of sacrilegious fury as “Judas Cradle” and “JC Auto”. 1994’s second full-length LP, File Under: Easy Listening once again made an explosive arrival, this time landing in the upper reaches of the overall Billboard 200. The album saw SUGAR pushing boundaries yet again on songs like the Americana-tinged “Believe What You’re Saying” and the incendiary “Gee Angel”, tackling a wider range of musical approaches without sacrificing their signature intensity and unrestrained power. Despite their successes, SUGAR called it a day following a Japanese tour in early 1995. A series of live recordings, reissues, and anthologies served to magnify the band’s legacy over the three decades since, confirming SUGAR as incontrovertible masters of high-volume guitar-fuelled rock for the ages. The original members of SUGAR reconvened in June 2025 to record “House Of Dead Memories”, “Long Live Love”, and “Keep Looping” – the first new SUGAR songs in over three decades.
