Courtney Marie Andrews announces new studio album Loose Future

Courtney Marie Andrews announces her new studio album Loose Future which will be out on October 7 via Fat Possum. She enlisted Sam Evian (Big Thief, Cassandra Jenkins, Anna Burch) to co-produce the album with her and recorded the album at Evian’s Flying Cloud Recordings studio in the Catskill Mountains. Album credits include Chris Bear (Grizzly Bear) on drums and Josh Kaufman (Bonnie Light Horseman) on multiple instruments. First single Satellite is out now.

Andrews initially approached the album by writing a song every day. She felt ‘the sounds of summer’ flowing through her writing, and gradually collected an album’s worth of material imbued with a sense of romance, possibility, and freedom.

On the honey shores of Cape Cod in a beach shack, Courtney Marie Andrews found self-love and her voice. Every morning, she’d walk 6-8 miles around the back trails of an island and meditate on her life, perusing old memories and patterns like browsing a used bookshop. That summer of introspection led her to a joyous sense of beginnings and ends. When she let love for herself in, she therein let the outside love in, too—the summer feeling, the swaying cypress, the full moon, and the possibility of healthy love. This phase came only right after one of her darkest, though, where being alone with oneself was the most terrifying thing you could do. After more than a decade on the road, the Phoenix-born songwriter, poet, and painter finally had the space to process all the highs and lows of a life of constants. She was finally ready to make a record of triumph, while not forgetting the years that made her into who she is.

The new single Satellite is something of a departure from the more traditional Americana sound of Andrews’ earlier releases, the track builds from a breezy guitar and vocal arrangement into a dreamy tapestry of synths, layered vocals and reverb-abetted slide guitar. The song is accompanied by a video that finds Courtney chasing satellites in the woods of the Catskill Mountains on a bicycle hand-made for the intergalactic. “I’ve written a lot of love songs, but there’s always a tinge of heartbreak,” explains Andrews. “But “Satellite” is a love song without caveats. I wanted to look forward, and fall in love with the mystery of someone. Let love in, without questioning or instigating how it might hurt me. Sonically, I wanted to go to space. This kind of love isn’t earthbound.”

Courtney garnered her first GRAMMY Award nomination in the category of ‘Best Americana Album’ for Old Flowers in 2020. Along the way, she also unveiled her debut poetry collection, Old Monarch.

On June 15 Courtney Marie Andrews will play at EKKO, Utrecht (NL).
