Danish alternative rock singer/songwriter ME vs ME releases second single from forthcoming EP

After nearly two decades away, Christoffer Mariager—former frontman and bassist of the uncompromising rock band The Burning Primitive—returns with a project that feels like a debut. For the first time, Christoffer Mariager is going solo and releasing his own music under the alias ME vs ME. The music is melancholic, cinematic rock created entirely on his own terms, spread across two EPs—one in Danish and one in English.

The Danish-language EP with the straightforward title EP1 will be released as the first one on January 30, 2026, marking yet another first for Christoffer, who has never written songs or sung in Danish before. Back in November, he released the first single in the shape of the anxiety themed ‘Skyggedans’ together with a music video, and today the second single is released — the positively forward-looking ‘Saa Klar’ (‘So Ready’ in Danish), about which Christoffer says:

‘Saa Klar’ is about nurturing love and friendships, young and old alike. About daring to jump into the unknown, and as the first line of the song says: “Full speed ahead without looking back, soo ready!”

Mariager’s name will ring a bell to anyone who remembers The Burning Primitive. The band helped define Denmark’s late-’90s and early-2000s alt-rock underground, touring across Europe, supporting bigger acts, and even landing airplay on MTV’s Alternative Nation.

“We were a pretty big underground band — but without the success part,” says Christoffer with a laugh that contains equal parts nostalgia and calm.

Growing up in Aarhus, music began as a sanctuary for Christoffer. But after leaving home at the age of sixteen, music provided a sense of direction. From then on, everything revolved around music. With the band, the dreams got bigger, while Christoffer traveled the world. But behind the scenes, an invisible opponent was growing. “I started feeling physically ill before shows — cold sweats, chest pressure, racing thoughts. It completely knocked the wind out of me." What he didn't know at the time was that he was suffering from anxiety.

Eventually, he had to pull the plug. He traded in the tour bus for family life and a steady job, and for years, music was something that lived quietly in the background. “I've always had a rehearsal studio with a bunch of friends. I never stopped playing,” he says. “I just stopped showing the world what I was doing.”

Then, turning fifty, the spark returned — this time entirely on his own terms.“I woke up and thought, Now what? I wanted to immortalize myself with some music.” In his home studio, Christoffer built a new project from scratch. Everything is written, recorded, programmed, and produced by him. “I wanted to see if I could do everything myself. It was a bit of a challenge, but it was freedom.”

Despite the title ME vs ME, Christoffer is not entirely alone. The drums were provided by his friend Peter Bruun and Kellii Scott of the American band Failure – a name that, like Mariager's former band, sprang from the 1990s alternative rock scene – while the mix is handled by Mario Quintero from Spotlights. “I just reached out and sent them some tracks, and they were immediately on board”, he says. “It felt like my old heroes were helping me cross the finish line.”

The music lives somewhere between rock, electronic texture, and melancholic pop. It's less raw than The Burning Primitive, but still charged with the same nerve. “I’ve always been drawn to melancholy,” he admits. “But I think I’ve found softness in it now. It doesn’t feel heavy anymore - just true.”

For Christoffer, ME vs ME isn't about reviving the past; it’s about using experience to make something real. A clarification, not a comeback.“This isn’t about chasing charts,” he explains. “It’s about being intentional. I just want to leave something behind that feels like me.”

And maybe that’s exactly what makes ME vs ME feel like such a sincere debut — one that can only be created by someone who has lived long enough to know that sometimes you have to lose in order to find yourself again.
