Delaire The Liar Announce New EP “SELF DEFENCE” Due September 1st Via Rude Records & Release New Single “Angel Number”
Today, boundary-pushing alt-rock trio Delaire The Liar have announced details of their highly anticipated upcoming EP. Titled “Self Defence”, the EP is set for release through Rude Records on September 1st and available for pre-save here.
“Self Defence” is a superb return to form for Delaire The Liar. The newly-revitalised three-piece have created an emotionally rich and complexly layered body of work in an approach that is completely unique to Delaire The Liar. Speaking on “Self Defence”, the band said: “In the throes of desperation, there's no telling the lengths a person will go to preserve themselves or their loved ones. This EP presents a series of fictional scenarios to challenge the typical understanding of self defence. The usual themes surrounding the topic are present; antagonism, violence, action and reaction, but with a focus on the more drastic instances that require a less reflexive and more considered approach. Instances that require a deeper understanding of the self, emotional capacity for pain, physical capacity for punishment, moral detachment and sacrifice for the benefit of yourself or someone else. This EP explores whether there is any defence too drastic or too difficult to justify when love, pride and responsibility is involved.”
Following their return to form with the acerbic “Bite Trap” (which will appear on the upcoming EP) and subsequent notable live performances, Delaire The Liar have released “Angel Number”, a layered and tender earworm (mixed again by Kel Pinchin of Modern Error and self-produced by Delaire The Liar) which sees bassist Em Lodge take up lead vocals while building to a fragile crescendo.
Speaking about “Angel Number”, Delaire The Liar said “the pain carried from past relationships, the boundaries and hard lines we draw to protect ourselves from vulnerability can create a new potential. A potential of rationalising actions we would have otherwise never thought ourselves capable of. Cold, calculated, isolating, radical and dangerous behaviours that leave you ultimately, alone.”
“Angel Number”' acknowledges the signs and disregards them. It's a lesson, hard learned, that sometimes the bravest way to defend yourself is to open the door and let love back in.”
Hailed by Kerrang! as “Truly excellent” and “Reminiscent of Marmozets, and even At The Drive-In” by DIY, Delaire The Liar are known for their punk rock dexterity and imitable live performances. The London-based three-piece ended December 2021 by releasing their powerful EP Eat Your Own to praise from BBC Radio 1, Upset, Kerrang!, When The Horn Blows and more across the UK music press. Standouts at last year’s 2000 Trees festival, Delaire The Liar appeared as a live act at the Heavy Music Awards in 2022, headlined their own show at Face Down in London, and picked up impressive tour support slots with As Everything Unfolds, Creeper and Vukovi to name a few.
Utilising a weaponized punk rock attitude that feeds into a visceral delivery and live performance, married with a fragility and earnestness that extends a welcoming hand to the listener, Delaire The Liar are set to explore the nuances of human emotion and response. Unafraid to be vulnerable, unafraid to be hysterical and open to all.
