Emmanuel Jal Shares "Crossover"

Emerging South Sudanese artist, Shammalee, collaborates with acclaimed international hip hop artist Emmanuel Jal and talented Kenyan singer Angel Atieno to release “Crossover”.

The song co-written between Shammalee and Emmanuel Jal was inspired by the loss of Shamma’s mother and the struggles young people are forced to face as they grow up. In addition, 11-year-old Kenyan artist Angel Atieno adds her extraordinary vocals to the emotional song which states “this power from the suffer, made me cross over, struggle made me stronger ‘Ba shabol ngen skeker’ / made me glow and become awake’ (Nuer).

“Emmanuel Jal and I are both from South Sudan, I saw our stories crossing paths as we have both been refugees at one point in our lives and suffered the loss of our loved ones. Looking up to Jal as a fellow country man who became successful against the odds through music, gave me the spirit to validate my dreams and the reassurance that there is always a way out. You can feel this energy in our collaboration which is the perfect blend of both our stories. Angel’s powerful vocals despite her young age, adds further magic to the meaning and inspiration behind the song.” – Shammalee.

The “Crossover” video was shot on the tough streets of Makongeni, Nairobi, by Kenyan Director Nezzoh Montana. The visuals portray individuals in the community who use their strength and resilience to ‘crossover’ and follow their heart (purpose), their mind (vision) and activate their goals. The video was sponsored by Nido NEXIM International Development Organization. NIDO builds both primary and secondary schools in East Africa that offer free education to the children of conservation officers who pledge to avoid corruption and prevent poaching of endangered animals in East Africa.
