Emmet Cohen announces European Autumn Tour Opening October 29
Pianist, composer and bandleader Emmet Cohen brings his quintet to Europe this autumn for a 13-date tour marking the centennial year of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The run opens at Gazarte in Athens on October 29 and takes in Budapest, Přerov, Berlin, the Madrid and Bologna jazz festivals, Sacile, Gdańsk, Bydgoszcz, Echternach, Utrecht and Groningen, with a sole UK date at London’s Wigmore Hall on November 2. His latest album, Universal Truth, is out now on Mack Avenue.

Cohen is joined on the road by drummer Joe Farnsworth and tenor saxophonist Tivon Pennicott, both of whom feature on Universal Truth, alongside trumpeter Benny Benack III. The programme draws on the album, Cohen’s fourth for Mack Avenue Records, which pairs classic repertoire associated with Davis and Coltrane with Cohen’s own three-part Universal Truth Suite.
Released in May, Universal Truth brought bassist Ron Carter and tenor saxophonist George Coleman together for “My Funny Valentine,” more than sixty years after they played on the Miles Davis album of the same name at Lincoln Center’s Philharmonic Hall. Elsewhere, Carter and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt drive Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” and Jimmy Heath’s “Gingerbread Boy,” while Coleman and Pennicott trade tenors on Coltrane’s “Blue Trane.”
“In all my research and study into John Coltrane, one phrase always stuck out,” Cohen explains. “‘Universal Truth.’ When Trane talked about his artistry and his calling, his intention was always to seek that universal truth.”
The tour follows a year of near-constant performance for Cohen, from International Jazz Day in Chicago with Herbie Hancock to residencies at Smoke and Birdland in New York and DC Jazz Fest. Alongside the road, he continues to host Live From Emmet’s Place, the livestream series that has passed 140 two-hour broadcasts and more than 100 million views worldwide.
