Ena mori confronts selfhood on majestic new EP 'rOe' | out now via Sony Music Entertainment & Offshore Music

Genre-defying Filipino-Japanese indie/art-pop artist ena mori today releases new EP 'rOe' via Sony Music Entertainment and Offshore Music. To mark the EP release, ena today releases the video for focus single 'Portion Control'.

Characterised by a relentless pursuit of innovation, new EP 'rOe' is an six-track project that finds ena mori revisiting her childhood, and how it shaped her moral and emotional compass as an adult. Featuring previously released singles 'Trust Me', 'Heartache Generation' and 'Sink' - the EP is a reinterpretation of the memories of her early years with the perspective she carries right now.

“rOe isn’t about making grand statements. It’s more about being present in the process—figuring things out in real time. It's that feeling of being in your 20s, still feeling like a child when you're expected to have it all together. I may not have the perfect words to describe it yet, but somehow, in this moment, it makes sense to me," ena mori said.

A coming-of-age project but not in a traditional sense, 'rOe' navigates the emotional whiplash of entering your twenties with one foot still planted in childhood. To sum it up, it’s about the paradox of forward motion while feeling stuck.

Closing song ‘Cub’ carries one of the record’s most resonant lines: “I know the consequence of life, oh what a life / but I don’t want to live in a world of lies.” It’s a quiet rebellion: a refusal to erase the child within. One of the first tracks written for the EP, 'Cub' became a spark for its wider themes — a reminder to herself to keep dreaming and stay connected to her inner child: “Making music often feels supernatural, like you’re floating in a dream. And I wanna feel that every day," ena says.

Growing up in a Japanese household, fish roe was something that she and her family enjoyed growing up, which served as the inspiration for the name of her new EP, citing the sense of comfort she feels to something tied to a part of her life. “This EP has no 'ending', I feel, very cyclical in shape. That felt symbolic of where I was emotionally—small but full of potential, unsure but still growing. It just felt right to name the EP after that feeling.”

Compared to her previous releases, new EP 'rOe' seeks to explore and revisit ena mori’s classical roots, with Bach serving as an inspiration for the melodies - adding to her explorations into alternative and industrial music - noting the avant-garde spirit of Björk, Kate Bush and Tori Amos as further points influence. “Working with Tim [Marquez] (my producer) really opened things up too—he introduced so many creative possibilities and helped shape the blend of sounds.”

Earlier this year ena mori played an exciting run of London shows, including a packed-out set at SXSW London, and a buzzy support for PUNCHBAG - following standout sets at SXSW in Texas and Clockenflap Hong Kong, and slots supporting AURORA in the Philippines and Singapore earlier this year.

ena mori is quickly becoming one of Asia’s most captivating exports. Her independently released debut project 'DON’T BLAME THE WILD ONE!' topped NME Asia’s Best Albums list ("a triumphant rallying cry for the dejected, filled with pop hooks that reach for the stars"), and she's since been hailed as Billboard Philippines’s Rule Breaker of The Year.
