Estonian electronic act Wateva release new bitbird album “Disposable Society”
‘Disposable Society’ is finally here, the debut studio album of the electronic Estonian duo WATEVA. With an aesthetic that makes you uncomfortable yet curious and sonics that makes you unable to stand still, WATEVA has become extremely popular in their home territory. The entire album features Estonian artists as well, making it truly a cultural moment.
The theme of this album is all about the dark future of our shared planet. It is meant to bring light to what will happen if we don’t change course and rethink our current consuming habits. It’s also a glimpse into the beauty of the post-apocalyptic earth.
When asked about the focus track, “Disposable Society” the guys said,
“The track that gave the album its name and the concept. We wrote this at the end of 2019 with MANNA. While being in the studio we started talking about the climate and current state of affairs in the world as a whole. And decided we should write from a place we imagined ourselves in, 1000 years after everything has gone to waste. There would be no more countries, no more politics, no more power-hungry corporations, no more pollution. [The lyrics] “Walking through the meadow, it’s just plastic and some metal” is the memory of what used to be, when looking back from the future. [The lyrics] ‘’See the west coast breeze’’ is now coming back to the future. We stand where there used to be the Santa Monica Pier, but thanks to time passing and the earth healing itself, the coastline is completely covered in snow.”
Each of the songs on the album represents a moment in someone's life from this future world still living on Earth, sharing short stories from different perspectives. Life on earth still hasn’t lost its value, and people have learned to find their way despite the destruction.
The concept of being a disposable society is so relevant today, while most of us struggle to find a purpose on this little rock in the sky, fighting against many of the very issues mentioned above. We are taught to throw things away rather than fix them, we are taught that money and power are the keys to success, and we watch the leaders of our world wage war and earn profit on the losses of others. It is clear that much of society already resonates with the idea of a future like this because it almost feels like an inevitability. As dystopian films fly off the shelves, and grim pandemics clear our streets, one can only expect a future as dark as this to manifest. After the foreshadow cast by the pandemic, WATEVA is here to serve as a warning for what may come, while also bringing a sense of beauty to the madness. Through the perspectives of the very lives living in this post-apocalyptic world they hope to show listeners that whatever happens, we will find our way
