Fink's most beautiful single yet?

A song for songwriters and a message to anyone who’s overrun the emotional landing position they’d aimed for, acclaimed and globally-regarded alt-folk three-piece, FINK return with the delicately driving One Last Gift, the latest single to be revealed from their upcoming album, Beauty In Your Wake. Unrushed and meticulous with equal dedication to the craft of gently unravelling, emotive song and stone-upturning, acutely detailed recording processes, the single sets expectations at an even higher bar as the band’s latest long-player nears its Fri 5 July 2024 release.

Cut-glass, picked riffs, swirling atmospherics, an immoveable, driving kick-drum beat and singer-songwriter, Fin Greenall’s laid-bare vocal protect and enhance a sense of intimacy on One Last Gift, whilst an uncomplicated, ‘no second guesses’ studio performance offers fans one of FINK’s most confidently upbeat tracks to date. Where last single, So We Find Ourselves dialled the volume down with hushed delicacy to turn the emotional heat up, FINK reach for relative abandon over nearly six minutes of bold, emotional exploration.

Reunited in rural Cornwall for album sessions that discarded expectation in favour of flow, Greenall and original FINK bandmates, Tim Thornton (drums/guitar) and Guy Whittaker (bass), One Last Gift is an exemplar for how the trio remain intuitively on the same page in the treatment of the songwriter’s consistently introspective, life-affirming ideas.

Greenall says: “I sang into the hole of my nylon guitar through my effects to get this kinda Thom Yorke-alike vocal flow. Tim came with a grooving riff and a flowing rhythm and Guy pulled out his 90’s rave trousers for a kinda throbbing rave bass line. Somehow this all fits. Like with all of the recordings for this album, I really didn’t want to think too hard about it. This song didn’t get re-written or re-edited or overworked. I wrote this beautiful song, sent it to the boys, and then we recorded it in the chapel, as simple as it should be. Just write what is inside you and not what you think you need to.

“The song really turned into a song about itself, about writing and about how the only person of importance in the process of creation is yourself. That and just wanting your loved one to know if you could do it again, maybe you’d do it differently. Figuring it out in the aftermath I feel is like a classic play for me, for men maybe in general.”

FINK announced that the three frequent collaborators had come together to record as a band for the first time since the release of 2014’s Hard Believer album earlier this year, using the release of first single, What Would You Call Yourself, to introduce a new, naturally-productive phase. Having spent his early years in Cornwall, the now Berlin-based Greenall gravitated towards the new studio of Grammy Award-winning producer Sam Okell in the out-of-the-way village of Zennor to lay down a batch of new songs amidst a sense of unhurried calm.
