Fixkes Present New Cover Album 'Danny & Danny'
Covers! For Fixkes, that's the moment when their eyes start to sparkle and all available enthusiasm is brought out. Last year, the band toured through Belgium with a "request show" (think Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Walk Like an Egyptian). This year, they’re kicking things off with Danny & Danny, a full cover album. It’s all in Dutch but otherwise very eclectic: a few classics—hello Louis Neefs, hi Urbanus—and a few lesser-known gems. Fixkes cheerfully puts its own spin on them.
Fixkes is still famous in Flanders, at least partly thanks to the record-breaking hit 'kvraagetaan'. That song held the number one spot for what felt like a hundred thousand weeks and has since been etched into the collective memory. At least one person (not himself) has called singer Sam Valkenborgh the Ray Davies of the Low Countries, because of his gift for observing small moments and transforming them into something big. Meanwhile, the band has tossed indie rock, hip-hop, folk, and Urbanus into a blender to create a recognizable, somewhat eclectic blend. This is also the case with Danny & Danny, where the love for beautiful songs is evident. Maybe soon it, too, will become part of the collective memory. And if not, they’re stillgood friends.
