For Your 69th Grammy® Award Consideration: Gergana Velinova - Free

Gergana (Gair-GAH-nah) believes a song’s real life begins when it quietly finds its way into the listener’s world and becomes part of their story. There is a moment on every track where the melody settles into your heart before your mind has caught up. Free is that kind of album.

Free was written over five transformative years. During a season when Gergana devoted herself to motherhood, caring for a child whose health required her full presence, and later navigating the stillness of the global pandemic, she found herself writing not for concert halls, but for one small listener asleep in her arms.

Free carries a double meaning. It reflects the feeling of freedom a person can experience when a soaring melody lifts the spirit on a journey above the mundane things of life. At the same time, it expresses Gergana’s renewed sense of freedom as she embraces her new life as a Canadian citizen, a milestone she reached in 2025.

Musically, the album traverses a wide stylistic spectrum — ECM-inspired contemporary jazz rooted in her Bulgarian heritage, jazz/pop, sensual Bossa nova, blues reflections, and lyrical ballads. Each line is shaped to be sung, remembered, and lived with. Released on Cellar Music Group, the music unfolds through singable melodies that settle into the heart before the mind has caught up.

At the heart of the project is a profound artistic reunion. Free is produced by platinum-certified producer, multi-instrumentalist, and fellow Sofia Music School alumnus Kristian Alexandrov. Having known each other since their teenage years, the two Bulgarians share a deep creative trust. Alexandrov’s expansive musicianship and production vision elevate the album’s rich textures while preserving the intimacy at its core.

With Free, Gergana does not simply release another album. She invites the listener inside. You come to Free thinking you are listening to her story. Somewhere along the way, you realize you are listening to your own.

The album reflects her belief that a song’s real life begins when it enters the listener’s world and becomes part of their story. The result is music where singable melodies settle into the heart before the mind has caught up.

“Come a little closer. Come look inside this heart. What do you see? Do you see me?”

All compositions & lyrics by Gergana Velinova. Arranged by Velinova and Kristian Alexandrov
