Matt McGuyer steps out on his own with Silver Linings, a towering and deeply intentional solo effort that gives power, curiosity, and humanity the spotlight.

Known for his work in Amblare, Mock Orange, Faerie Ring, and Off-Ox, McGuyer expands his experimental sonic identity here, letting loose a behemoth as intricate as it is accessible: equal parts crushing and catchy.

At its core, Silver Linings is driven by McGuyer’s unmistakable, tastefully mathy drumming style. Fluid and deeply-rooted in the DNA of late-’90s and early-2000s math rock, it’s intentional and driven by creative accentuation.

Across twelve tracks, McGuyer constructs a dynamic world through this rhythmic backbone where atmosphere and aggression coexist seamlessly.

The ambient intro of “Sleepy Train” opens the door, and “Embrace” sets the record’s thunderous tone, pairing a wiry riff with pounding instrumental emphasis. The first half of “Sway” leans further into the tension while allowing room for octave-stacking reminiscent of Cedric Bixler-Zavala about halfway through.

“Adieu” stands as the centerpiece. Opening with a chunky, inventive riff before unfolding into a wide emotional spectrum where restrained vocal passages collide with explosive, cathartic bursts of guitar and cymbals. It’s as heavy as a breakdown but as tempered and controlled as a ballad.

“Windchime” delivers one of the most important and crushing moments of the album at (0:37), while “Slugbug” introduces a slightly off-kilter, almost playful energy through its sliding note work and unconventional phrasing. “Turnt” balances an onslaught of noise-laden Death Grunge reminiscent of Chat Pile with quick pivots to gazy atmospheric soundscapes.

Silver Linings is meticulous, heavy, and alive. Mixed and Mastered by Mario Quintero of Spotlights, the powerfully-human production allows space for each element to shine and breathe.

McGuyer understands restraint just as much as he understands impact, and that awareness elevates Silver Linings beyond a collection of songs into a cohesive, immersive experience that deserves at least a couple full-listens.
