The group was born from the meeting of musicians already well-known on the Italian scene:

Michele “Mike” Giuliani (Lùnapop, Clamat), Mariagiulia Degli Amori (Iosonouncane, Daniela Pes, A Toys Orchestra), Paul Pieretto (Settlefish, A Classic Education), and Giacomo Gelati (Altre di B, Lo Stato Sociale, LaPara). The project found its home at Vacuum Studio, under the production of Bruno Germano.

The idea of joining forces arose after watching Get Back, Peter Jackson’s documentary on the legendary 1969 Beatles sessions, which sparked the urge to create music together—raw, unfiltered, and full of enthusiasm.

“After watching it, I immediately wrote a series of demos, and during twenty-five hours on the bus back from London after the Blur concert at Wembley in summer 2023, I played them for Mariagiulia and Bruno. That’s how Gee Whiz! officially came to life,” recalls Mike.

The lineup was completed only in early 2024 with the arrival of Paul and Giacomo, who brought depth and energy to the songs and arrangements, solidifying the group’s chemistry.

Mr. Dinosaur previews the album Gee Whiz!, coming next spring—a burst of positivity, guitars in constant dialogue, and a solid, eclectic rhythm section. The track is a bright answer to the melancholic mood of Dinosaur Jr.’s Feel the Pain, which sings, “I feel the pain of everyone, then I feel nothing.” The riddle resolves in an embrace: “You hide a heart of gold / behind that scary growl / you are my hypersensitive friend / you need to get out of your shell / and find a good vibration / we need an adventure!”

The Mr. Dinosaur video, directed by Pafo Gallieri, is a 2D animation set along the road from Bologna to the Adriatic coast. It follows Mr. D, a character trying to make sense of modern life and social media, navigating chaotic, excessive, and farcical moments—a province filtered through a pop-grunge lens.

Gallieri, an Italian animator and director based in London, has collaborated on projects such as The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (Oscar), Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, and Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasure.

The new single already contains all the signature elements of the Gee Whiz! sound: infectious choruses and melodies, guitars in playful call-and-response, and a rhythm section that moves with imperturbable power and versatility. The adventure has begun.
