GØ Release New Single “VinstraHøgra" From Upcoming Album ‘Ævir, amen’
Hailing from the inspiring landscapes of the Faroe Islands, bold jazz ensemble GØ continue their innovative musical journey with the release of their second single "VinstraHøgra" (English: LeftRight), from the highly anticipated album ‘Ævir, amen’, due on November 8th, 2024. Following the powerful debut single "Loysing í dós," which addressed the century-long Faroese struggle between independence and union, GØ takes a light-hearted yet subtly poignant turn with this new track.
"VinstraHøgra" is a vibrant and funky piece that radiates the carefree joy of childhood play. Inspired by the Faroese children’s song "Vinstra, Høgra," the track is both playful and introspective. While capturing the essence of fun, it also carries a subtle political undertone: "Vinstra" (left) and "Høgra" (right) refer to political ideologies, gently poking fun at how the adult world of politics can sometimes resemble the dynamics of a children's playground.
When speaking about how the song came together, GØ frontman Ólavur Ey. Gaard stated "VinstraHøgra is actually one of our older tunes that we kind of forgot about. Right before heading to the studio, we stumbled on an old demo and thought it would be a great fit for the album. Our keyboard player, Kristian Pauli, came up with a new groovy bassline, and Hjørtur added a funky drumbeat, and that’s basically how it came together. The song just flowed from there. It’s also one of our favourites to play because it’s a simple structure and gives us a lot of space to improvise and jam."

GØ’s debut album offered a fresh, modern take on the free jazz genre, drawing significant local attention and establishing the band as a key player in the Faroese jazz scene. Now, four years later, GØ is set to release their second album, "Ævir, amen." The thematic and aesthetic concept for the album is a commentary on Faroese cultural and political matters. This new album features nine tracks written by frontmen Ólavur Eyðunsson Gaard and Kristian Pauli Ellefsen.
After a somewhat DYI approach when producing their first album, this time around GØ has collaborated with producer Per Ingvald Højgaard Petersen (known for his work with Eivør, Lea Kampmann, EMP). This collaboration turned fruitful in elevating GØ’s sound, making it even more focused and unique. Additionally, the new album includes five-piece horn arrangements on several tracks, enriching the music with added complexity while preserving the integrity of the compositions.
GØ is poised to make a significant impact once again with ‘Ævir, amen’, an album that not only showcases their artistic evolution but also solidifies their status as one of the most exciting musical acts to emerge from the Faroe Islands.
