ira glass — the undefinable Chicago quartet of Lise Ivanova (vocals/guitar), Landon Kerouc (drums), Jill Roth (saxophone), and Kaleb Wallace (bass) — today unveil their new single/video, “fritz all over you,” from their forthcoming EP, joy is no knocking nation, out November 14th via Fire Talk. Recorded straight to tape by longtime collaborator Brooks Hannon, joy is no knocking nation is a five track outing that resists categorization. ira glass tap noise, post-hardcore, screamo, and free-jazz to create a spellbinding outing anchored by Ivanova’s transfixing vocal delivery. “fritz all over you” is sleek and hyperspecific, with screeches of “beer pong captains” and “flawless coifs // torn torn torn” scattered throughout. The accompanying “fritz all over you” video — helmed by Giulz Foulkes — is dimly lit and highly eerie.

On “fritz all over you,” ira glass lean into their “volatile and mesmeric" (Stereogum) impulses, as the track starts full-octane and stretches into a jazz, whispered climax. “fritz all over you” follows this summer’s “fd&c red 40,” which received praise from So Young Magazine, Paste, Stereogum and more.

Of the track and its accompanying video, ira glass add: “We wanted to stitch together several disparate parts. Some parts of the song were spontaneous compositions, others were puzzles that needed solving. For the outro we wanted to experiment further with long, jazzy outros, similar to what we did on last year’s "torrid love affair with a family annihilator." The vignettes in the video align in form with the song where we wanted to display each member performing a different action.”

joy is no knocking nation is the sophomore EP from ira glass, following the underground waves of their 2024 debut compound turbulence flexing for the heat. In the year since its release, ira glass have cut their teeth across self-booked tours, countless performances across Chicago’s many independent venues and DIY operations, and in the process have cultivated a reputation for their confrontational, genre-bending performances. Propelled by Roth’s masterful scribbles of saxophone, and Kerouac’s relentlessly ruthless percussion, joy is no knocking nation is intoxicatingly disorienting. The disparate elements ira glass weave together across joy’s five songs are held together in an exhilarating balancing act.

For joy is no knocking nation, ira glass returned to their trusted collaborator Brooks Hannon, who engineered their debut at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios. Together, Hannon and ira glass recorded joy is no knocking nation straight to tape across multiple sessions at Chicago’s beloved Jamdek Studios and West Town Magnetics. These sessions and the resulting EP distill ira glass’ inimitable live energy. With Hannon there to capture, ira glass performed each song in their entirety, and added little to no overdubs. Filtered through warm analog layers, joy is no knocking nation presents a cacophony of noise, anchored by ira glass’ timelessly punk ethos and disarmingly poetic musings.

Throughout the fall, ira glass will perform a slew of shows around Chicago, including a free EP release show at The Empty Bottle on Monday, November 18th. A full list of tour dates are below, and all tickets are on sale now.
