Jack Panther releases sensual and hypnotic music video for Blue Boy
Following the release of his debut EP this dream i had including the singles This Dream, Headlights and Sleep, Wellington-based dream-pop artist Jack Panther is proud to release the music video to his latest single Blue Boy, available to watch here.
The sensual and hypnotic music video works as reimagination of Greek sirens luring sailors to the depths of wild seas. Preferring the romantic, painterly medium of 16mm and super8 film to digital, Blue Boy’s analogue approach and camp styling echoes queer synth-pop from the 1980s. Panther says about the vision of the music video: “Developed from the joint vision from Veronica and I, Blue Boy pushes the boundaries of usual video format, utilizing the conflict between romanticism and friction as the focus to the piece. It’s an ethereal, dreamy yet dark ode to the beautiful melancholy behind the lyrics”
The performers move through intimate classical positions as Panther delivers a plaintive ode straight to camera, calling to the now-iconic performance approach of Robyn and more recent pop artists Troye Sivan and Christine & the Queens.
“The movements and physicality is really important in exploring notions of romanticism and queerness” says Panther of the Blue Boy video. “I wanted to express melodrama, moodiness and honestly just create a space in which to be camp. There is a huge space in Aotearoa for more queer art.”
“Blue Boy tells a story of loss and lust, of betraying loyalties while struggling to let go”, says Director Veronica Crockfors-Pound of PICTVRE. “We wanted to bring that double-edge sword of pleasure and pain to the video: the complications of loving. There is dark and light, push and pull. Intimacy is complex.”
Rich on-set lighting and an emotive approach to editing highlights compelling performances from Panther and sister sirens Rob Tennent Roxie Mohebbi (NManagement). Frequent PICTVRE collaborator Tennant styled the video, offering a richly textured palette of neo-classical romanticism through use of fabrics, sequins and dewy pearlescent jewellery.
Jack Panther’s debut EP this dream i had was released on 13 November and available here.
