After a near-death experience, serious illness, the loss of a close friend, and finding new love, Jacob Bredahl is set to release his first album under his own name. LOVE/SICK, a dark rock record with nine songs, drops December 4, 2026, and today Bredahl shares the album’s first single, the bleak ‘Only Darkness’.

Bredahl states on the song:

“‘Only Darkness’ is about discovering a sinister side to someone you thought you knew. I suppose it’s something a lot of people can relate to, because it can happen in any kind of relationship: watching someone you trust repeatedly cross boundaries and slowly become a stranger. It’s about the stories you might one day tell about them at their funeral.”

On September 10, Bredahl performed the songs live with a full band for the first time, opening for Lack at Pumpehuset in Copenhagen alongside musicians from EYES, LLNN, and ORM. Bredahl will be bringing his band along tonight when he performs at Slowburn Taproom in Albertslund. Later this month, he will play four shows abroad without the band, supporting Lack, before returning to Copenhagen for the album release show at Kolme, once again with the full band.

For more than 30 years, Jacob Bredahl has been a fixture of the metal, hardcore, and punk scenes. And while he continues to make loud, fast, and aggressive music with Smertegrænsens Toldere and death metal band Unavailing Void, his debut solo album, LOVE/SICK, takes a different approach. No less dark, but considerably slower and more melodic, the record reveals a far more vulnerable side of Bredahl.

The past five years have brought Bredahl countless hospital visits, a near-death experience, and the loss of a close friend. Experiences that have left their mark on both the man and his music, particularly his lyrics. Lingering pain and outrage at life's injustices run like a dark undercurrent through the record. At the same time, a new love has brought a sense of peace into his life, offering stability amid the turmoil of recent years. LOVE/SICK is born out of these opposing forces.

Despite the weight of its subject matter, there's a lightness to the music that makes the record surprisingly accessible, even at its darkest. When asked what to expect from LOVE/SICK, Jacob Bredahl cites Danzig 4 as a reference point, only to immediately backpedal. Still, the influence is hard to miss. The album was produced and mixed by Bredahl, who also provides vocals and guitar.

Along the way, he enlisted the help of some good friends, including Mads Folmer Vennits Richter (Bleeder, Halshug) on drums, Jacob Johansen (Lack) on bass, Martin Medom Olsen (formerly of Riverhead), Peter Peter (Bleeder), Jacob Krogholt (Empath) and producer Tue Madsen on guitar, as well as Lars-Bjørn Hansen (Dear Bear and Koldborn) on vocals and Anne Mette Hancock and Vega Faith Hancock on backing vocals.
