James Mac Combines UK Drill Vocals With Tech House Power via Murky, Club-Ready Afro House Single "Truth" on Insomniac Records
James Mac continues his ascent towards Afro house dominance with his latest, eclectic single on Insomniac Records. Renowned for his graceful and culturally expansive global house sound, the breakthrough producer is shown melding a multitude of disparate influences to construct a murky, club-focused afro house offering, “Truth.”
“Truth” finds an exquisite balance between the vibrant roots of Afro house and the modern stylings that have transformed the genre into a vehicle for universal elation on dancefloors around the world. A pulsating, rounded kick is the driving force behind the intriguing production, with subtle percussive taps, sizzling shakers, and crisp tribal drum programming allowing the groove to simmer to perfection. Above the rhythmic hotbed sits the track’s hypnotic synth line, which epitomizes the adage of “less is more.” With four circular notes propelling the gritty, sawtooth basslines, the subtle yet effective melody continues to turn up the temperature, especially as the unapologetic UK rap vocals fill out the dark, rolling groove. “Truth” is a living example of how house music can feel like a breathing organism, evolving and permutating into different yet cohesive forms. James Mac reinforces that reality with a genre-blurring single that’s perfect for peaktime club nights or sunrise afterparties.
Touching on the single’s broad appeal, James Mac describes “Truth” as a track that’s “produced to pop—whether it is in the car or on the dancefloor.”
He elaborates on the musical melting pot that went into its creation, explaining: “The idea behind the track was to combine a couple of different musical styles, a very tech house bassline with a more afro house vibe coming from the drums. And, most importantly, incorporate the UK / drill style vocal. Bringing these three key elements together to make a dance floor-oriented track.”
Originally born in Australia, James Mac now operates out of France, immersing himself in a country intrinsically tied to dance music culture. The expat runs a club night at the famed nightclub Amnesia Cap d'Agde, where he’s performed alongside international icons such as FISHER, Cloonee, DJ Snake, and Francis Mercier. Outside of his home base, 2025 will see him deliver his fresh club sounds in Asia, India, Australia, and the USA. 2023 saw him break through with his instant classic, “The Boy Is Mine,” which has amassed nearly 90 millions streams since its release in 2023, in addition to claiming the #1 spot of the Beatport ‘Afro House’ chart for four consecutive months. The staying power of the single led to tastemaker support from top-tier names from the likes of Keinemusik, Sparrow & Barbossa, MoBlack, Cloonee, Layton Giordani, and more. And with his debut appearance on Insomniac Records, Mac is now maintaining the momentum towards global superstardom.
“Truth” is the best possible outcome from musical culture clash, and clubbers and festival-goers in all four corners of the Earth will enjoy this sharp fusion all summer long.
