Jaye Woods releases his new album, HEAL.

Today, Hamilton composer, producer, veteran emcee, and hip-hop artist / therapist, Jaye Woods, releases his new album, HEAL. The album is anchored in a soulful, vintage world of hip-hop that weaves in sonically diverse textures and melodies while being rooted in a lyrical awakening of honesty, reflection, growth and unlearning - Jaye is a practicing therapist after all. The stories, lessons and unlearnings he raps about have shaped his journey as a Black man learning to love himself, despite the tragic patterns within himself, his family, and the world around him that could have given him every reason not to.

The emotional centrepiece of the record is the title focus track, Heal ft. Abbie Winger & Jon Corbin. Jaye accepts what he can’t change in his family while taking responsibility for his own path. Abbie Winger’s soaring vocals sing of the safety she finds in divine love. And sobering mid-life reflection from Jon Corbin culminates in a sharp, bar-for-bar trade-off with Jaye, inviting the listener to realize their own power to heal what needs mending in their life. Listen to the record and title track, out everywhere now.

Recorded between the home studio of Adam Pondang (Tyler Shaw, Grace Kinstler) in Toronto’s east end and Jaye’s Hamilton office closet, that has been converted into his vocal booth, the album tells a story of what it means to heal a wounded spirit from the inside out, told through a dual lens, as both an artist and therapist, working through his own inner baggage.

“A little before turning 30, I realized that desperately wishing my uncomfortable emotions away wasn’t going to cut it anymore,” shares Jaye. “This album chronicles years of me untangling some socially inherited insecurities, getting clearer on how I want to relate to myself and others, and finally making peace with all the beautiful messiness that makes me human.”

Since he was a child, writing rap and hip-hop music has been Jaye’s way to make sense of his inner world. During the pandemic days when he and his wife moved back under his family’s roof as newlyweds, it shined a light on a lot of emotional weight he’d been harbouring. As he wrote the album and processed, it came became clear that most of the songs on the album were sparked by a need to find clarity in the pain and patterns he was reckoning with in this season. Songs like Open Heart helped Jaye get clear on how much he valued emotional transparency, while Boundaries helped him unpack why saying “no” to people always felt so hard and came with a tinge of guilt.

“Writing these songs had real therapeutic benefit for me,” adds Jaye. “It addresses pain without getting stuck in despair and feels hopeful without slipping into toxic positivity. It feels like an honest, grounded reflection of the spectrum of human emotion...I want to invite as many listeners as possible to lower their emotional guard and see themselves with a little more love and compassion.”

And with HEAL, there’s a pretty darn good chance that’ll happen. Jaye hopes the record offers a musical mirror through which people can take a tender look at themselves and learn that they deserve to see themselves with honesty and care.

Previous singles released from the record this year include Say What U Mean (feat. Cj Cruicks), which received coverage from CBC’s The Block and Humble & Hustlin’, and the single You Deserve (feat. Aubrey Noronha). Read more in the BIO and stay tuned as HEAL continues to unfold in the coming weeks.
