Jonathan Jeremiah new album Good Day

Jonathan Jeremiah has confirmed details of his new album, GOOD DAY, and the release today of the record’s title track as its opening taster. The album is the London based Brit’s fourth, as well as his first for PIAS Recordings, and will be released on CD/LP/Digital on August 31, 2018.

The title track – which also opens the record – was, Jeremiah says, inspired by reading Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With A Thousand Faces, and the song is intended to reflect “my happiest moments over the last three years, like hanging out with my friend Ruben on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. It’s my ‘everyday’ moment of bliss.”

The track’s upbeat groove is a perfect introduction to a record that eclipses everything Jonathan has achieved so far. It showcases the remarkable depth of his craft, with his wonderfully weary, warm voice carving out haunting melodies amid uncommonly sophisticated arrangements from The Heritage Orchestra’s Ben Trigg.

Drawing on the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, Scott Walker, Richie Havens, John Martyn, Carole King and James Taylor, GOOD DAYis nonetheless far from a counterfeit time capsule. It’s instead about Jonathan identifying the appropriate manner in which to present his songs, and if there’s anything he’s learned over the years, it’s that “Timing is a feeling, and music is a feeling. When you get people playing together, it’s about that feeling. I can’t see a link between computers and a feeling. Computers don’t breathe; they calculate.”

Jonathan Jeremiah’s first, acclaimed album – A Solitary Man, described by the BBC as “elegant and soulful, a luscious artefact of 1970s songwriting class” – was released in 2011. It earned gold status in Holland, where it charted at No.3, and also reached No. 11 in Germany and Belgium. Two further albums, 2012’s Gold Dust and 2015’s Oh Desire, earned him further accolades, not least a phone call from legendary James Bond composer John Barry.

GOOD DAY was recorded at Ray Davies’ Konk Studios, described by Jonathan- who also produced it - as “a beautiful environment in which to get six or seven people together.” He didn’t stop there, however, cramming a 19-piece string and horn section into the room. “That’s what I’m trying to capture with my records,” he explains. “The sound of people together...”
