LUX (Velvet Rock) - New album 'Super 8' out on May 25th

LUX is the product of a chance meeting in Paris between eminent blues/rock guitarist Sylvain Laforge and New Yorker Angela Randall.

Their self-described “Velvet Rock” combines elegant lyrics, thrilling vocals and consistently stunning guitar work that slides forward from the blues/folk/pop/rock influence of the ‘70’s into a sound that is at once analogue and contemporary. LUX lies somewhere between Tom Petty and R.E.M.

A first 5-track EP and now with their debut album “Super 8”, LUX has been playing

in such well-known venues as La Boule Noire, Café de la Danse, Supersonic and the New Morning in Paris. LUX was invited to play at the Cornbury Music Festival in England in 2016 and most recently completed an acoustic tour in New York.

About the album...

LUX’s first full (10 track) album is a beautiful follow-up to their 5 track EP released in 2014. Then and now, the duo that is LUX – formed by blues/rock guitarist Sylvain Laforge and singer/songwriter Angela Randall – chose live analog recording at Studio Black Box – this time with Peter Deimel of Black Box as Producer. Deimel’s first contribution was deciding which of the wealth of songs by Laforge/Randall to record and structuring the album with an A-Side and B-Side. In doing so, each of the 10 tracks find their place on this album, which is characterised by a sincerity and authenticity of sound to which LUX is devoted.

“...LUX slide between decades quite comfortably with their artful knit of acoustic and electric guitars, expansive, unhurried songs (where guitar solos almost become songs within songs) and vocals surging from waifish to ballsy and back again. Moments of classic psychedelia shine proudly between jangly power pop and rootsier, bluesier tones but always with credibility and purpose, never just to brag that they know how.

...What really rocks isn’t volume. It’s intensity and intensity glows at any volume; in a chord change, a note, even a pause between notes. There are plenty of rousing rock moments and surging choruses on this album, (no shortage of amped-up crunch), but the intensity here is subtler than most bands, knife sharp, and it penetrates. ‘Horse’, ‘Hijack’ and ‘Damaged’ are the blues, rock and mesmerizingly psychedelic/circular tracks that define Side A along with title track “Super 8” which reminds us that LUX is a band that tells stories with a strong visual sense. Side B offers the softer ‘Island’ and ‘I’m a Martian’ and the upbeat “While waiting” before closing the album as it ends with the slow burning of “Liquid and Fire”.
