Magic: Tales of Life, Love and Death is the new record by The Leaf: a concept album that intertwines alt-rock, prog, and metal in eight mystical stories, inviting listeners to journey through dystopian imaginary worlds where magic shapes the destinies of the characters.

Eight tracks, eight spells, connected by a tree that transcends space and time, symbolizing the metamorphosis undergone by the band during the writing of the album. The concept revolves around the idea of a magical tree, rooted in every story as an invisible but omnipresent entity. Its genesis is recounted in Alchemy, the narrative heart of the album, where an alchemist chooses to transform himself into a tree, finally abandoning the contradictions of being human to return to a more noble and altruistic body. Other images revolve around this one: the oak tree where the white witch of White Magic rests, the Norse Yggdrasil (World Tree) evoked in Runic, and the esoteric suggestions of Cabala and Voodoo. All the songs deal with universal themes such as love, loss, independence, and self-acceptance, linked by the common thread of change, the band's true mantra.

On a technical level, Magic: Tales of Life, Love and Death is the result of multifaceted sound research. Indie rock, prog, and metal blend into a dense and balanced musical fabric, reflecting the different souls that make up the band. The album, produced and mixed by Maurizio Griglio (aka .noir.) and recorded/mastered by Dario Ravelli, alternates between epic atmospheres and more intimate and introspective moments, maintaining a modern and visionary sound.

Listening to the album is like reading a grimoire that bears witness to the variety of spells present in the world of The Leaf. Black Magic opens with a story in which pain drives a man to perform a dark ritual on the edge of a volcano. Its counterpart is White Magic, an anthem that focuses on physical and mental health, a condition that facilitates self-acceptance. In I Ching, the first of the two unreleased tracks on the album, the tone becomes lighter and more nostalgic: the young Kumiko learns to experience love without fear of destiny. Clairvoyance is the second unreleased track, characterized by alt-rock and prog-metal sounds, mirroring a mind overloaded with other people's emotions, struggling to stay afloat. Alchemy marks the centerpiece of the album with the founding myth of the tree, and Runic combines strength and poetry in a cry for independence against all forms of violence, while Cabala and Voodoo contribute to the completion of the album's darker and more enigmatic atmosphere.
