Manchester's acerbic fun punks Hungry release 'Sick Of It

Damning the toxic ‘big men’, hacking at the shackles of conformity and shouting out for more supportive, creative circles that cradle us all in hope, Manchester’s most exciting, emergent live band, HUNGRY are back with their latest single, Sick Of It. Carving out the shape of societal change with positive vibes, energy and incisive, character-driven lyrical acumen, the four-piece’s latest track points the way to the band’s upcoming, debut EP.

Sweaty, frantic gigs in basements, house parties and in-demand club night slots have followed breathtaking previous singles, The Jig, which was heard on BBC Radio 1 Future Artists, and On Sight, picking up nocturnal minutes on Radio X amongst waves of spotlight interest from critics and new music-seeking streamers.

Sick Of It is released in view of more live shows, including their own community tour, taking over a South Manchester suburb, having already hit key venues like YES and Gorilla with their path-clearing tornado of punk-powered indie. The single marks out Hungry’s distinct blend of politics, fuzzed-up songcraft and unabated energy, calling in fans of pre-fame-bloat Idles, wordy indie-pop wise-crackers, Sports Team and anyone indulging in the visceral heat of modern post-punkers, DEADLETTER.

HUNGRY’s quickfire lyricist, singer-guitarist and frontman, Jacob Peck, writes Sick Of It as a study of lost ambition and surrender to the rat race through a fictional character, before taking on the second half of the song with a take more personal to him, the band and the shape of their ideal future.

He says: “This tune is short, snappy, and does what it says on the tin in under three minutes. Exactly how it should be. The character of in the first part of the song is a cog on the up and up through the rat race, where childlike wonderment has given way to an endless, adult nine-to-five existence. When we switch out of the character at the bridge, it’s more about us, our ambitions and ethics.”

“We’re sick of structural career progression, capital gain, and physical symbols of success as they pull us away from our passions and personal ethics. But music gives us hope of creating a more meaningful life.”

Selling out show after show in their adopted home city, the committed Cambridge émigrés find their best fit with a student population out for fun, freedom and confirmatory choruses about the world’s perilous state. Entering and embracing a new phase of productivity with that groundswell of support, continuing to circle the effervescent band scene in their own back yard, HUNGRY is made up of Peck’s co-conspirators and school yard friends, drummer, Stan Rankin, guitarist Kit Thomas and bassist Jas Malig.
