Marie Dahlstrom releases new album MARIE via JFH Records

The Roskilde-born & London-based vocalist, songwriter and producer will mark the release of the new album with a headline show at The Lower Third in London on 8th October.

Dahlstrom's third album MARIE arrives at a moment when life has become fuller, busier and infinitely more complex. Since her previous releases, Dahlstrom has become a mother of two while continuing to build a life between London and Copenhagen. Those experiences shape a record about maintaining relationships across distance, watching parents grow older, raising children and recognising the moments that deserve our attention before they pass. Written over the past two years between London, Copenhagen and Los Angeles, the self-titled record draws on deeper jazz influences, live instrumentation and a close-knit international cast of collaborators, including Corey Fonville of acclaimed Richmond jazz collective Butcher Brown, Los Angeles pianist and producer Elijah Fox, Cuban percussionist Eliel Lazo, south London rapper Jords, and her longtime collaborator (and partner in life) DanDiggas, resulting in Dahlstrom's warmest and most personal work to date; the clearest portrait yet of who she is as both a musician and a person.

Warm Rhodes chords, interlocking percussion and layers of self-harmonised vocals run throughout the record, with spacious arrangements allowing its live performances to breathe. On 'Joined', the full Butcher Brown band build on a simple piano-and-vocal voice note Dahlstrom recorded at home, transforming a song about the birth of her second son into a tender celebration of family.

"I made a voice note on the piano, just simple vocals and piano and sent it to Corey," Dahlstrom recalls. "Him and the guys went straight to the studio and recorded Joined. It was a really cool way to get their interpretation of the demo. The song is about my 2nd son Levi, and how he has joined our family together in a new, stronger way."

Elsewhere, the entirely self-produced piano ballad 'You Don’t Look Up Anymore' considers the moments lost to screens and distraction, while 'Where You Are' grew from a bedtime conversation with her four-year-old son about death. "I felt like holding on to him and not ever letting go," she recalls.

Yet MARIE repeatedly returns to gratitude and perspective. As Dahlstrom explains of opening track 'Gold': "We have this one life and in many cases we have a choice about how we view it. What we make of it. This song is a reminder to choose the good; you never regret happiness."

Rooted in neo-soul, jazz and understated grooves, Dahlstrom has been recognised across Billboard, NPR, Complex, COLORS, NYLON, The Line Of Best Fit, TRENCH, Wonderland and beyond.

From her 2020 debut album 'Like Sand' through to 2023’s 'A Good Life', she’s cultivated a glowing reputation, drawing praise from BBC 1Xtra tastemakers across the board and US cultural co-signs including repeated recognition on The Joe Budden Podcast, alongside collaborations with Odeal, Jay Prince, Kofi Stone and Braxton Cook, and culminating in a sold-out headline show at London’s Village Underground marking the release of 'A Good Life'.
