MC Solaar: new album "Géopoétique" out now

After 10 years of silence, Claude M’Barali - better known as MC Solaar- recently released his 8th studio album, Géopoétique. M’Barali, with both Senegalese and Chadian roots, has been a passionate music fan from an early age. He listened to rap music throughout his teenage years, while growing up in the Parisian suburbs. It was not long before the teenage Claude became an adept of this new style. Changing his name to MC Solaar (adapted from his old graffiti tags SOAR and SOLAAR which he used to spray on the walls of his local housing estate), the young rapper went into the studio in the summer of 1990, accompanied by his sidekick Jimmy Jay, to start recording a series of demo tapes. One of the songs on those demo tapes, ‘Bouge de Là’, became MC Solaar's début single and it proved to be an instant hit, rocketing to the n5 spot in the national charts. (‘Bouge de Là’ also won the ‘Victoires de la Musique’ award).

26 years after his debut album ‘Bouge de Là’ MC Solaar is back with anew album, Géopoétique. The now 48-year-old rapper has matured and is trying not to become a parody of his past success. He made quite some eclectic choices for this new album; rap, soul, jazz and even funk-rock, there’s a bit of everything. “I wanted to make an album with a lot of stories, something that could be a ‘therapy for the 21st century’”, M’Barali told Le Figaro. MC Solaar's innovative rap style revolves around soft melodies and finely-crafted poetic lyrics. The French rapper, renowned as an insatiable reader of novels and newspapers and an avid collector of dictionaries, has an exceptional gift for language and his songs are filled with clever puns and wordplay.
