Michael C.Duguay Shares "Tithes (Reprise)"
Michael C.Duguay today releases a new and innovative version of his track “Tithes”. “Tithes” is a cross-Canada collaboration between Michael C. Duguay (Ontario), award-winning improviser and saxophonist Andrew MacKelvie (Halifax) of New Hermitage, and Whitehorse’s producer/sound-artist Jordy Walker (Richard Reed Parry, Little Scream). The track is taken from The Winter of Our Discotheque (Reprise), a compilation album of Canadian artists performing interpretations, remixes, and covers of the songs of Michael C. Duguay’s The Winter of Our Discotheque. The Winter of Our Discotheque (Reprise) is out on December 4th.
Returning to his career as a musician in 2018 after nearly a decade of struggling with and overcoming mental illness, addiction, poverty, and homelessness, Michael C. Duguay assembled a collection of his poetry, compositions, and song-sketches into what would become The Winter of Our Discotheque. The Winter of Our Discotheque (Reprise) is not only a celebration of Michael’s much-loved personality, songwriting and music, but an enthralling testament to friendship, community, and collaboration by a spectacular and diverse assortment of artists on the vanguard of contemporary Canadian music.
On collaborating with these two far-flung artists, Michael states, “Jordy and Andrew are both, respectively, two of my favourite people and artists to work with. While Jordy and I have only worked in-person together for a week in 2019, and Andrew and I have never met in person, through this pandemic they have become and remained my closest creative co-conspirators; friends and artists I turn to for guidance, advice, and inspiration. This piece is the beginning of what will certainly be a lifetime of collaboration between the three of us.”
On the collaboration, Andrew MacKelvie states “I wanted my re-imagining of “Tithes” to be a journey guided by field recordings, improvisations, and material from the original recording. As we move from the natural world into the city, Michaels heartbreaking lyrics emerge like a series of thoughts that float above the din of the cacophonous saxophones, which represent the anxious mind, swirling uncontrollably.”
The Winter of Our Discotheque (Reprise) is set for release on December 4th 2020.
