Montreal's Stoylov Announces 'Malvina' LP Out Nov 10th

Stoylov, the indie music project led by Montrealer singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Dubé, today announces their sophomore album Malvina and shares the first single, “Body Aches”. Exploring themes of uncertainty and spirituality, Malvina is set for release on November 10th 2023.

“Body Aches” is an attempt to portray one’s struggle with hypochondria. “Although I don’t believe hypochondria is pathological in my case - my therapist told me so -,” says Nicolas, “ I do tend to interpret the slightest aches of my body as a sign of illness. Perhaps this apprehension of being stricken with a severe disease takes roots in this idea that we, humans, are made of flesh and blood, nerves and bones, and, around us, plants and trees grow, insects buzz, birds chirp, clouds drift in the sky, rain falls, and we often disregard the fact that we are also an intimate part of a grand scheme.”

The abrasive guitar, belligerent bass, visceral groove and haunted synth layerings on this track give a nocturnal, eerie and moody atmosphere. The use of obsolete tape recorders and the immoderate indulgence in reverberations that permeate the song give the impression of being on a boat, surrounded by vastness, and being swayed by the water. Although the song has a kind of stark character to it, the lyrics are rather comical, depicting the drollness of being ‘’overly drawn in the slightest aches of one's body’’.

Nicolas devoted countless hours over the last two years to the crafting of Malvina with an obsession to details in chord progressions, melodies, rhythms, arrangements, tones and atmospheres. Co-produced by Joe Grass (Elisapie, Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers), mixed by Howie Beck (Feist, River Tiber, Milk and Bone) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova (Andy Shauf, Bahamas, Devandra Banhart).

Characterized by a cinematic musical approach reminiscent of film noir soundtracks, lush sonic textures, upbeat grooves and earworm melodies, Stoylov pushes the boundaries of the indie rock genre while inviting you to dive into his own soundscape like you would experience in a Dostoievsky's novel or a David Lynch movie.
