Movietone reissues legendary album 'Day & Night' & release previously unheard track ‘Phonograph Space’

Domino is delighted to be reissuing Movietone’s incredible second album Day And Night on the 16th October.

The album will be preceded by the release of previously unheard/released track ‘Phonograph Space’, which is being digitally released today (15th September). The track is from the original album sessions and got transferred straight from the original tapes.

An overlooked diamond of 90s British music, Day And Night is a perfectly crafted slice of atmospheric post-rock that floats somewhere between late-era Talk Talk and Broadcast with a healthy dose of Alice Coltrane. Described by Stephen Pastel in The Quietus as "one of the great unknown English groups”, Movietone spawned out of the collective of acts that were associated with the Bristol-based Planet Records label in the early 90s, including Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation, Crescent and Hood.

Their debut was reissued by Geographic in 2003 and World of Echo two years ago, but Day And Night has become somewhat of a sleeper hit, with NTS and adjacent DJs bringing the tracks to a new generation of listeners. This will be the first time the record has been reissued since it was originally released in 1997.

Day And Night (REWIG199) will be available on digital, CD and standard vinyl formats, as well as an exclusive vinyl edition that also includes 'Phonograph Space’ alongside another track from that era 'Marine Océano ’, as a bonus 7”. The exclusive vinyl format will only be available through Domino Mart, Monorail (Glasgow) and World of Echo (London).

All physical formats will include a booklet designed by hand by Kate Wright from Movietone, featuring numerous photos from her archive and handwritten captions, as well as some beautiful liner notes from Stephen Pastel (available on request).

Domino will also be hosting a Q&A/Playback event at Strange Brew in Bristol on Sunday 18th October, which will feature band members in conversation with author Richard King. The event, which runs from 7 - 10pm will also feature a Movietone DJ set and record signing. Ticket links are as follows:
