It could be argued that Muddy Waters has had more influence on the sound of the popular American music that we hear coming out of our radios, computers, smartphones and tablets than any other single American artist of the 20th century. Consider the scope of that influence: Muddy’s trailblazing use of electricity as tonal effect; his groups that were the template for modern rock and pop ensembles; his songs that spoke about previously taboo topics along with his sexually charged stage charisma that paved the way for the rebel “bad-boy” rocker. It is clear that Muddy provided the blueprint for rock and pop groups as they exist today.

He was a bona fide contemporary artist, breaking more rules and conventions than he followed; he pushed the borders of sound and song, telling his own stories with a voice so original, emotionally explosive and powerful that he would not only put the MAN in “Mannish Boy,” but would go on to lead the charge that changed the face of music forever.
