“Multitude, le film”, a unique dive into Stromae’s live
Mosaert is pleased to unveil ‘Multitude, le film’, a unique dive into Stromae’s concert designed for his third album Multitude.
Directed by Cyprien Delire and Luc Van Haver, the film will be broadcast on December 6 on French TV channel TMC and TF1 at 9:10 PM CET, and will be available on YouTube, for free and without ads, from December 14, 2024.
Multitude: a critical and commercial success above all
Although the tour could not be completed, Multitude remains an exceptional adventure, marked by resounding critical and commercial success; 1.1 billion streams, over 870,000 copies sold worldwide, numerous certifications (triple platinum in France, Belgium and internationally) and multiple appearances in prestigious media such as the New York Times, Rolling Stone, NPR and Pitchfork.
Stromae has also captivated many renowned television sets, from Jimmy Fallon to Tiny Desk, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert's Late Show. Not to mention his performance on the TF1 news where he made an impression by singing his second single L'enfer live on air, stirring the emotions of millions of people.
An avant-garde and immersive show
For this third album, Stromae and his team had imagined a show of great scenic complexity based on an absolutely new device; a giant screen measuring 15 by 5 meters, supported by 10 giant robotic arms, each weighing nearly a ton and a half.
Each piece was displayed in a unique tableau thanks to a meticulous choreography of this structure. This titanic work, the result of more than six months of work, mobilized more than 200 people around the world for its design and installation.
Launched in February 2022, the Multitude Tour opened with three premieres in Brussels, Paris and Amsterdam, before Stromae joined the stage of the biggest festivals, from Coachella to Werchter Boutique, Rock en Seine, the Paléo Festival, NOS Alive and Sziget.
The second leg of the tour took him to North America, where he performed in major cities from Los Angeles to Montreal. His appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York, for two sold-out concerts, marked a historic milestone, making him the first French-speaking artist singing in French to accomplish this feat.
Scheduled to resume in March 2023 and end at the end of the year, the third part of the tour was unfortunately interrupted in April 2023, after a few European dates, for health reasons.
A tribute film to end the adventure together
“Multitude, the film” was intended and thought of as a declaration of love to the fans. It pays tribute to the support, kindness and understanding of the public in the face of the cancellation of the end of the tour. “I was deeply touched by the empathy of the public,” confides Stromae, “and that is why we wanted to create something special for them. This film is our way of saying thank you.”
As Luc Van Haver (co-director of the film and executive & creative director at Mosaert) points out, this creation was a real challenge. “Initially, the idea was to make the film of the live performance at the ING Arena in Brussels in June 2023. Following the interruption of the tour, the project had to be abandoned. But, driven by the goodwill of the public and our desire to immortalize the work accomplished so far, the project was resurrected in another form. We set about gathering, not without difficulty, everything we had at our disposal to recreate a coherent live performance with the images that had been gleaned here and there throughout the tour."
In total, we assembled more than 1,500 shots; a real puzzle!" adds Cyprien Delire (co-director of the film). "This patchwork montage gives the film a unique identity. We have the feeling of being everywhere at once. We go from one country to another and from one venue to another, each time with unique points of view. The only constant is Stromae and his show."
