Nicolas Michaux releases new single and video

Nicolas Michaux releases 'Nos Retrouvailles' today, the new single from his upcoming album 'Amour Colère' out in September.

The single is one of those unusual, and nowadays rare songs in rhyming verse in a classical style. It has an ageless charm while at the same time It puts into words and music the mixed feelings of this current moment : a mystical, melancholy dream of mixed idleness and hopes. It’s a scion of the best traditional French chanson with the addition of a delicate indie- pop soundtrack, like a pasolinian tale touching themes of desperate love, grief, separation and re-union in this or another world. Lying somewhere between Alain Souchon and Andy Shauf, between Jeanne Moreau and Metronomy, it’s a pop song in a world of its own, an imaginary world where the bride lifts her veil in a city of madmen , where souls are in flood and lovers are pure diamonds, a hidden green and blue valley ,glimpsed from the high dark ramparts of the contemporary city.

Recording and production was by Michaux himself with the help of faithful collaborator Morgan Vigilante , drummer par excellence. The accompanying video is by Simon Vanrie and was filmed within the confines of the city of Brussels on industrial waste land, underlining the parallel symbolism of the poetic vision where love and nature relive amidst the ruins of the world of the previous generation .

Nicolas Michaux is both a singer-songwriter and music producer. Born and bred in Belgium he now divides his time between Brussels, where he is part of the musical collective Capitane Records, and Samsø, where he tends his garden and writes his songs. Michaux sings in both English and French and his music stands at the crossroads of different traditions: the great era of the French "chanson", the American songwriters, the Brit rock of the 60s, and the early new wave. Still, he is guided by a distinctly personal spirit. His recordings feel homemade and communicate an organic modernity. His production style paints vivid sonic pictures rooted in an intimate knowledge of his instruments and the textures they evoke. Like a landscape painter, Michaux's work often feels like a meditation on the living world, with the musical spectrum as his paint.

Michaux released the critically acclaimed debut album 'A La Vie A La Mort' in France in 2016. 'Amour Colere' will be released in September 2020 worldwide by Capitane Records.

Nicolas Michaux on 'Nos Retrouvailles'

"I began writing this song in 2016 when I first went to Samsø. It was sunny in the tiny courtyard of the house we were renting at the time. I finished it three years later when I returned to the island, and made an acoustic version before producing several months later the version which figures on the album. It’s a bit mysterious, the song, but also well balanced. I hardly feel I wrote it. It was always there. Discovered rather than composed. It lends itself to several interpretations and that’s what I like about it. It has more than one voice. Like many of my songs, I feel it should be sung by a woman and not me. It’s my feminine side maybe which creates , writes, sings. The masculine side cracks open the beer can at the end of the recording."
