“When You’re There” arrives as the lead single of Nnic’s debut E.P. ‘Slow Motion Fantasy’, set for release everywhere on 30th July 2021. A track that touches the vivid art/pop stratospheres chartered by Christine & The Queens, La Roux, or St Vincent, the track is also accompanied with sublime visuals courtesy of multi award winning installation artist Aoife Dunne.
Offering an abstract representation of time pressure, loss of control and the need for vibrant escapism, “When You're There” finds Nnic juxtaposing these universally recognisable feelings with electrifying grasp. Opening with the biting declaration of wanting to be “More than just a creature that produces young”, “When You’re There” takes an explicit jab at the current landscape surrounding body acceptance and change in attitudes.
Lyrically, it’s a track that takes stock of the progress society has made towards accepting feminist ideals, and questions whether its come far enough. Here Nnic poses the question she feels so many women are pressured to ask themselves no matter what age shape or size they are: ‘How will you fit this ever changing mould?’. Taking on social media’s propagation of filtered and distorted body imagery, Nnic vents her frustration at ‘all this bulls**t we are told’ in one of many lambasting ripostes aimed at pro-distortion platforms that are peppered throughout.
Written by Nnic, “When You're There” was engineered and mixed by long time collaborator and fellow Irish artist James Smith AKA Yurn. Describing the process, Yurn says “When I heard the demo of “When You’re There” I got really excited... It’s quite a lofi sounding song, so I gave it a little richness with some piano and saturated some violin that ebbs and flows”.
“When You’re There” is taken from Nnic’s long awaited debut E.P. ‘Slow Motion Fantasy’, which arrives on 30th July 2021. A stylised, synth-pop marvel that’s unafraid to get political, ‘Slow Motion Fantasy’ sets sleek electronic soundscapes to lyrical explorations of distorted realities, examinations of traditional gender roles and reappropriations of suburban attitudes.
Speaking about the EP as a whole, Nnic says: “The concept for the E.P was born out of the need for vibrant energetic escapism whilst living amongst the slow outdated attitudes found only in cushy suburbia. Slow Motion Fantasy aims at the perception that living in suburbia is the quintessential ‘ good life’ but in reality, it's the breeding ground for unprogressive ignorance.”
Like the lead single, the EP was created remotely in collaboration with Yurn who fleshed its title track “Slow Motion Fantasy” from basic apple-loop into the playful, anthemic sound it has now; while adding the clipped percussives of a metal bongo fed through a 1970s memory man delay and the striking chorus bass brass sample that sculpt the alien soundscapes heard on “Chase Dream”.
Amplifying the themes that course through its every fibre, the EP is accompanied with the plastic technicolour of its eye-catching cover created by Aoife Dunne. The cover finds Nnic upending the ‘traditional housewife’ stereotype with an absurdist twist. Powerful, seductive pop unafraid to get political, Nnic will release ‘Slow Motion Fantasy’ on 30th July 2021.
