Northside - Madchester legends announce first album for 36 years 'Welcome to The Carnival' || UK Dates this Autumn

Manchester legends and Factory Records originals - Northside - bounce back with news of brand new music and their first new album in nearly four decades.

One of the defining bands of the ‘Madchester’ era, the four-piece are making an unprecedented return with what will be their first new album for 36 years: ‘Welcome to The Carnival' - due for release in Spring 2027.

Set to be the only official follow-up to their seminal debut album: ‘Chicken Rhythms’, the album is preceded by the new single ‘Hey! Mr Brown’, which will be released on 30 October.

Of the upcoming album release, frontman Dermo says:

“We can't wait for everyone to hear it. We genuinely feel like, for everyone who's heard the band, there's so many that haven't yet. We've saved the best ‘til last and you're not going to be disappointed.”

With its lilting, sunshine-soaked melodies, effervescent energy, and distinctly Northern charm, listeners can stream the lead single “Hey! Mr Brown” from the end of the month.

While Northside may have split way back in 1992, the band have been enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years. With a sell-out series of shows on their ‘Let’s Take Another Trip Tour’ last year, plus a warmly received reissue of ‘Chicken Rhythms’ for its 35th Anniversary putting the band firmly back in the spotlight, the band have since announced a string of UK shows this Autumn, capped off with a special homecoming show at Manchester’s New Century Hall for the 12th December, in which they will perform their classic debut record live and in-full.

With more music, live dates, and surprises to come, ‘Welcome to The Carnival' invites fans back to the world of Northside for another trip you won’t want to miss....

ABOUT NORTHSIDE

Hailing from the north Manchester suburbs of Blackley and Moston, Northside were an integral part of the Manchester early nineties soundtrack. Signed to Factory Records by its founder Tony Wilson, the band were the bridge between the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays, fusing psychedelic rock with Acid House.

Northside formed in early 1989 by Warren ‘Dermo’ Dermody and bassist Cliff Ogier, soon joined by drummer Paul Walsh and guitarist Michael Upton before Tim Walsh took over on guitar just before the release of their June 1990 debut single ‘Shall We Take A Trip?’’. The track made the 50 despite being banned by the BBC and many record stores for its drug references. Northside’s second single ‘My Rising Star’ followed in October 1990, charting at No.32. The singles paved the way for a classic debut album ‘Chicken Rhythms’ (FAC310) in 1991, a record produced by Ian Broudie which would go on to smash the UK Top 20 (charting at No.19), spawning further hit singles both sides of the Atlantic.

Riding high, Northside’s gigs were selling out everywhere and a second album was being demoed, with a release date in sight. However, the high expectations for the new album were dashed when Factory collapsed in autumn 1992, leaving Northside (and other recent signings) the victims of the bankruptcy. The band inevitably split up.

While the original line-up has reformed for occasional shows in the interim period, most notably in 2013-14, guitarist Tim Walsh tragically passed away in 2019.

Starting a new chapter in 2025, the three remaining original members Dermo, Cliff and Wol with new guitarist Rob Glennie, sold out the Let’s Take Another Trip Tour. Moving forward to 2026, a new spurt of creative energy has seen Northside working on a forthcoming new album with new drummer Andrew ‘Bod’ Smith and with some major UK live dates on the horizon. With ‘Welcome to The Carnival’ due for release in 2026, standby for further information on that very soon...
