Norwegian duo Nonne to release self-titled studio album

Norwegian duo Nonne will release their new self-titled studio album on 3 October on their own label SLOG Records. The duo produced the album together with Mikkel Moen. Their new single I et anna liv is out now.

Gustav Eidsvik (bass and vocals) and Erlend Skotnes (drums) met during their teenage years and soon became friends by playing in various bands together. After living in Oslo for several years, the duo moved back to where they came from. In Tromsø, they suddenly found themselves in a community of electronic dance music lovers and worked with techno pioneer Mental Overdrive as their mentor. As a result, they experimented more with electronics and played with more dance-like grooves than in their previous psych-rock-oriented sound. “With this new record we wanted to make something that has the same feeling folk-music can have, something ancient and mystic that puts you into a trance-like state.” - Erlend Skotnes.

Nonne's new, second album is an adventurous record with six very different but very coherent, long-winded songs, reduced to their essence, on which you can cry and dance at the same time. Building on the path they started with debut record Omf!, the songs have more of a pop structure, but are also twice as long and sound more in your face. The album draws inspiration from soul, psych-rock, reggae, acid-house, ambient, folk music and Northern Norwegian singer songwriters. Lyrically, they draw from their own lives. It's about letting yourself and the people around you do their own thing, for good or for worse, about (learning to) trust yourself and experiencing true freedom in that. But also about Gustav's father and grandfather and the (un)spoken things between them, and being euphoric on the dance floor.

Translated to ‘In another life’, I et anna liv was made after the band moved back to their hometown. As Tromsø is located above the Arctic Circle, the sun basically does not rise in winter and does not set in summer. I et anna liv is a unique, catchy pop song that reflects this contrast of light and darkness. A melancholic, almost dark melody and lyrics about the things that could have been, balanced with congas, maracas, a house-like bass line and a drum groove more reminiscent of a beach in the Caribbean than a cold, snowy island in northern Norway - giving the song a sense of new beginnings. “The first half of I et anna liv was inspired by a romantic relationship that didn't work out, and the second half came a year later when I met the woman who is my partner in life now. I was wondering what this was going to be. When something ends it's usually also something new beginning,” says Gustav Eidsvik. Watch the video below. Earlier the single Lar dæ gå was released.
