Pitou new single and video "Big Tear" out today

Pitou shares new single and video "Big Tear". It's the first single of her upcoming debut album, expected early 2023. Pitou is playing Rock Werchter festival this summer on Saturday July 2nd.

"This song is related to a childhood memory; my parents and I were walking around in my hometown, Amsterdam. I looked down and saw a bird dying on the pavement. It made me so incredibly sad - but when I looked up, I saw my parents were carrying on with their conversation, laughing. I remember this made me feel very confused, even a bit angry. There seemed to be sadness all around, so many tragedies waiting to happen... and yet the grown-ups seemed to be in denial of this. Now, I am one of those ‘grown-ups’ myself.

There is a balance between living with protective walls up, and being completely overwhelmed with empathy or sadness. I am not sure I have found it yet, but the balance is there, and I feel it sometimes. That is what this song is about.

One thing is certain; this Big Tear cannot be avoided, so I am trying to get to know it, trying to not be too afraid of it... learn to swim."

About the video

"I wanted to create a fairytale that paired well with the tale of the song. A girl stuck in a house, restless, wanting to start moving, but afraid of going outside. Eye-creatures, leaded by one small child-eye, come to the house - surrounding it. She feels them coming in closer, tries to ignore them, but is finally lured outside, where they face each other.

The pacing of the images translate the feelings of the different personas. Inside, with the girl, the tempo is fidgety, restless. Whereas the eyes have the opposite, a calm pace; slow-motion. In the end, when the girl has made contact with the eyes and is back in the house, the tempo is balanced, we are back to a real world, ‘normal’ tempo."

About Pitou

Pitou (both her stage name and her actual first name) was born and raised in Amsterdam, from which her parents regularly traveled to places such as Cameroon and India, with her and her sister in tow. Each year, they would head back to The Netherlands carrying cassette tapes filled with the sounds they had picked up on their overland adventures.

Despite her early introduction to more worldly sounds, it was an entirely different genre of music that shaped Pitou's songwriting craft. She started to develop an unexplainable interest in classical music from a very young age. Her father would often find her crouched down by the radio, scrolling through stations, in search of the sound of orchestras and choirs. From the age of 9, Pitou sang in a children’s choir. She performed at the baptism of Catharina- Amalia, the Princess of the Netherlands, singing the Matthäus Passion. “Singing together with other singers, making harmonies together, made me feel like nothing had ever done before,” she says of that time.

At the relatively late age of eighteen Pitou discovered pop, rock and the guitar - the songs came quickly after, carrying influences from her classical past and her family’s travels. She studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and released two successful EP’s with airplay at BBC and headline shows all over Europe. Now she’s ready to release new music of a new debut album expected in 2023.
