Rising Australian-Indian pop force ASHWARYA liberates herself on “Up In My Head”

Australian-Indian artist ASHWARYA – a really promising new act we’ve just taken on, who returns today with “Up In My Head” as the lead single from her forthcoming new EP Why’s It Gotta Hurt.

Cocooned in the traditional Indian drumming of the tabla and a swirling haze of electronic-laced chords, ASHWARYA’s emotive vocals dive into an exploration of love and hyperfixation - before they disintegrate into a flurry of vocal chops darting between 808s.

As a marker of her wildly creative ambitions, the accompanying video witnesses ASHWARYA deliver a boldly theatrical performance, framed in landscapes from desolate sand dunes and hauntingly empty corridors, to open country roads and the backseat of a vintage car.

ASHWARYA also takes this moment to announce the upcoming release of her project Why’s It Gotta Hurt, which will come through later this year as an exploration of longing, desire, mania and introspection.

Initially breaking onto the scene with well-received anthems like “BIRYANI”, “FLARE” and the collaborative track “To The Night” with US rapper Vic Mensa, ASHWARYA’s recent drop of a UKG-infused rework of her R&B laced hit “Best Friend” proves her genre-defying capabilities – fusing pop-minded melodies with electronic samples, unconventional arrangements, organic percussion and traditional Indian instrumentation to find a sound uniquely her own.

With career milestones including support slots for the likes of Dua Lipa and Broods, ASHWARYA has earned critical attention for her creations from Vogue Australia, Vogue India, ELLE, The Guardian, NME, Acclaim, Wonderland and Hypebeast, alongside consistent radio support from triple j and BBC Radio 1 – the scene certainly feels ready to embrace this intriguing new talent.
