Rock Project Illegal Mind Explores Autonomy and Social Expectations on "Never Wanted"

Illegal Mind returns with “Never Wanted,” a track that moves away from the traditional idea of rebellion. Instead of fighting against the system, the song exists inside it while refusing to fully synchronize with its expectations. Built around repetition, restraint, and clarity rather than emotional escalation, the track focuses on a decision that has already been made: normality isn’t universal — it’s optional.

Led by Maxx Dee, Illegal Mind continues exploring themes of autonomy, social conditioning, and selective participation. “I didn’t leave the system,” Maxx explains. “I just stopped syncing with it.” That mindset defines the core of “Never Wanted,” reflecting a life lived adjacent to the default script rather than fully inside it. Working, earning, and functioning within society while deliberately rejecting routines and expectations that were never consciously chosen.

Now entering the next phase leading into the upcoming album Nuclear Cockroach, Illegal Mind combines punk-driven energy, pop-punk, and easycore influences while maintaining its DIY foundation. Across releases like Riding Eleanor and Never Wanted, the project continues exploring autonomy, social repetition, and the tension between participation and disconnection.

What was the moment that inspired “Never Wanted”? “Never Wanted” came from thinking about all the expectations people put on themselves and each other. The idea of chasing things you’re told should make you happy, only to realize they were never really your goals in the first place. There wasn’t one specific moment that inspired it, but rather a collection of experiences and observations that eventually turned into a song.

Do you see the song as personal reflection or social commentary? A bit of both. It starts from personal feelings and experiences, but I think a lot of people can relate to it. The song reflects on individual struggles, but it also questions some of the pressures and expectations that modern society puts on us. I usually prefer leaving room for listeners to find their own meaning in it.

How has Illegal Mind evolved since becoming a solo project? Becoming a solo project gave me complete creative freedom. I can move faster, experiment more, and follow ideas wherever they go without compromise. At the same time, I’ve become more confident in what Illegal Mind is: a mix of post-apocalyptic themes, heavy music, punk energy, and personal storytelling. The sound keeps evolving, but the core identity has become much clearer.

What can listeners expect from the upcoming album Nuclear Cockroach? Nuclear Cockroach is probably the most punk rock album I’ve ever written. It’s fast, melodic, energetic, and heavily influenced by the music that got me into alternative rock, punk, and hardcore in the first place. While Illegal Mind has always lived in a post-apocalyptic world, this album approaches that world with a lot more speed and attitude. Lyrically it’s more personal than some of my previous releases, and musically I feel it’s my strongest work so far, both in songwriting and performance. If From The Ashes was about surviving the apocalypse, Nuclear Cockroach is the soundtrack to adapting to it and moving forward no matter what.
