Rony Verbiest is the real thing. Very few of us in Jazz are able to change the way people think about an instrument. Rony does just that. It's amazing what can happen in just three or four days between Jazz musicians. In that short period, I learned that not only was Rony unique, but a pleasure to play with. The things he does with his accordion on "Straight No Chaser" made me think he was from Belgium by way of Mississippi! I've never heard the Belgian blues on accordion, and swinging his a** off too. Having played with my father, the opportunity to perform with another original is a blessing. This session was one of the most unpretentious and rewarding musical experiences of my life. Mario Vermandel on bass and Hans Van Oost on guitar were amazing. Right in the pocket. Two great Belgians. As Thelonious would say, "Just play", was exactly what we did, and it worked. Rony Verbiest's accordion is a new joyous voice to hear in Jazz. (T.S. Monk)
