Benny the Moth are now back with ‘Spare Change’.
Benny the Moth are an original 4 piece band from Jersey, Channel Islands, known for their "genre-defying" sound that combines elements of rock, reggae, punk, soul and hip hop.
Formed in Gorey Village they have been active for over 2 decades and have become staples of the Channel Islands music scene with regular appearances at festivals like Jersey Live, The Weekender, Reasons and the Vale Earth Fair sharing a stage with the like of The Fratellis, Razorlight, The Skints and Gerry Cinnamon in addition to playing support slots with legendary acts The Delays, Dodgy and UB40.
A genre-bending, energetic, positive sound that defies categorization but offers a vibrant mix of styles together highlights their originality, tight live performances and ability to create unique, fresh music that's both fun and meaningful. Critics have praised the band for their high-energy performances and unique musical "melting pot”
Following the release of their track ‘No War’ on Bubblebrain Records in December 2022 and the remix version by Ian McCoy in February 2023, the band released their ‘Rise and Fall’ EP with the lead single of ‘Flavour of ’95’ in September 2023
After a brief hiatus to pursue individual and personal projects, the band released the No War (Liberation Mix) [Lee Contagion Remix] in May 2026, we are delighted that the Jersey four piece consisting of Lionel Gomes on vox/melodica, David Michel on Bass, Tom Kennedy on Guitar and James Evans on Drums are now back with their anthemic, stadium chorus ready belter ‘Spare Change’.
‘Spare Change’ is a high octane number filled with heavy guitars and driving drums and a distinctly nostalgic lyricism. It’s a track packed with grit and swagger with an underlying message depicted in the story-telling lyrics. It’s a rousing anthem calling for change “can you spare some change - be the change”
The band have said of the track:-
“The song is about the 2 walks of life and how that one isn't quite so distinct from the other given the right circumstances. Remember 80s movie Trading Places? A lot of us have been there, skint, homeless, crashing on mates floors, busking, scraping cash to get by, finding the will to get yourself out of it and vowing never to return. Never underestimate the man on the street, he might just need some help getting started.
It’s about supporting the busker on the street, the homeless person just trying to get by each day, the charities that depend on that loose coinage. In a digital world these people who need donations to survive are being squeezed out with nowhere to go. If you have loose change in your pocket please support them. Show some love and spare some change.”
‘Spare Change’ was recorded at Holyrood House, Jersey and was produced by Benny The Moth and was mixed and mastered by Gary Law.
