Sandhouse announce new EP 'Pollyanna' out 30 Oct via Broke Records & share sinister new single 'Gasoline'
South London duo Sandhouse today announce their second EP Pollyanna, out 30th October via Broke Records, and share new single 'Gasoline' ahead of tour dates with MOULD next month.
Fresh from touring with US indie-rockers she's green, Sandhouse’s Anna Sutherland and Caspar Holloway make the familiar feel sinister on 'Gasoline', pairing warped indie rock with strange, visceral imagery to evoke a relationship where affection and cruelty have become difficult to untangle.
The music follows an equally uneasy logic, its opening warmth unsettled by eerie textures and unexpected production flourishes. "I need to fight / but you look so good," Sutherland sings as the track spirals into a prolonged, claustrophobic outro.
Produced by Sandhouse's Caspar Holloway and mixed by Nathan Boddy (Nilüfer Yanya, James Blake, PinkPantheress), 'Gasoline' features bass and drums recorded by Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Nadine Shah).
Of the new single, the band said: "Gasoline is about being trapped in a relationship that feeds on the softest, most fragile parts of yourself, and how realising this after leaving tarnishes memories you once treasured.
"Whilst writing this song we spoke a lot about this image of people having a fantastic day at the beach, looking closer and realising that all their food is mouldy, the ice cream is covered in ants, and the seagulls all have the plague. We wanted the start of the song to reflect the feeling of a perfect day underlined with the ominous feeling that something is not quite right. The chorus is meant to be a moment of clarity before the long outro which musically is representing this idea that you’re trapped. Something about it feels good but you also want it to end."
'Gasoline' opens a new window into the stranger world of Sandhouse's second EP, Pollyanna, where romantic fantasies collide with fairytales and female demons. "Writing this music was part of a healing process and a way to untangle all the complicated feelings that arise from escaping from a terrible situation," Sutherland explains.
The EP takes its name from Eleanor H. Porter's optimistic heroine, exploring the impulse to keep believing in someone despite mounting reasons not to. For Sutherland, writing became a way to take back control of experiences that had left her feeling powerless, shaping both the lyrics and her vocal performances:
"We often talk about the songs being spells or me having magical powers," Sutherland explains. "For the vocal recording for parts of the EP I imagined I was a giant monster that was part woman, part crow when I stepped up to the microphone."
Reading Hans Christian Andersen’s original The Little Mermaid and accounts of succubi and sirens, alongside conversations about the anime Fullmetal Alchemist, fed into that imagination. Across the Pollyanna EP, the desire to disappear into romance sits alongside the urge to become something powerful enough to escape it.
Sandhouse’s musical language comes from a similarly wide-ranging exchange. Sutherland and Caspar Holloway first bonded over dance music, soul and Arthur Russell, and still spend much of their studio time playing music to each other. Their ambition is to make guitar music that carries the feelings they find in hyperpop, rap, soul, dance music and film soundtracks.
"A lot of our process is creating a powerful sound and then trying to figure out how to make it human, or find the complexity within it," they explain. "Or creating something very vulnerable and then adding the power to it."
Earlier tasters of the EP 'Snapdragon' and title track 'Pollyanna' established this direction, introducing the EP's mix of grunge guitars, bleary trip-hop production, warped psychedelia and nocturnal alt-pop, partnered with Sutherland's seductive, darkly playful lyrics.
Their 2025 debut EP Circus (which has already surpassed 4 million streams on Spotify) and subsequent singles have been tipped by key press tastemakers including The Line Of Best Fit, DIY Magazine, Rolling Stone UK, Dork Magazine, Under The Radar Magazine, The New Cue and more. Radio support to date includes regular spins across BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing (where the band were named Track of the Week).
The duo have also built a growing reputation on the live stage, with sold-out headline shows at London venues Corsica Studios, The Lexington and Peckham Audio helping spread the band's reputation largely through word of mouth, alongside support dates and tours with Dove Ellis, PORIJ, she's green, swim school, Bleach Lab and Panic Shack.
