Scores Reveal Their Addictive New Single‘Broaden Out’, Taken From Their Debut Album‘Vol. 1’

Indie-rock trio SCORES have released their third single ‘Broaden Out’, out 4th June . Cementing the group’s addictive, propulsive sound, the single is taken from their upcoming debut album ‘Vol. 1’, which will be unleashed on 9th July.

Scores are well-versed in making unadulterated, exhilarating indie-rock. The group are made up of a trio of veteran musicians, with Austin and Alexander Ward performing in internationally touring alternative rock bands Hembree since 2016 and The Noise FM since 2005, and CJ Calhoun is songwriter and vocalist in cult-favourite indie group Cowboy Indian Bear and releases solo music as Bonzo Madrid. As such, the trio know what it takes to make a killer track and have poured every inch of this knowledge into their dynamic sound. The three had long talked about creating music together, but it wasn’t until a month-long backpacking trip through Europe that Scores truly came into existence.

Now, the group have revealed their third single ‘Broaden Out’, a danceable, beat-driven indie-rock propelled by bass guitar, melodic vocals, and gritty synthesizers. It’s a sound inspired by the sounds the trio encountered in clubs across Europe, beginning with a moody introduction that underscores singer CJ Calhoun’s introspective lyrics, before reaching its climax with an extended dance groove. The song is accompanied by a music video directed by band member Austin Ward. Austin and Alexander live in Los Angeles. Charles Calhoun lives in Lawrence, Kansas.

“The song is about coming to terms with the fact that some of the things I struggle with in my head, I may never outgrow,” says Calhoun. It may be a life-long battle, and the feeling of being overwhelmed is reflected in the song. But recognizing and understanding that fact puts me in a position to feel less overwhelmed by those struggles. There is some power in naming your enemy.”

Littered with pulsating bass lines, pounding drums, and heavy synthesizers of the music the trio experienced in clubs while travelling, Vol. 1 is the Midwest band’s indie-rock take on dance music. From the scrappy, driving rock of “Over / Under” and “Parallels,” to the dark, bass-heavy future funk of “Talk Flood” and the industrial clanging of “Keep Yr Eyes Clsed,” Scores navigates a variety of moods while emphasizing an appreciation for tight songcraft, catchy melodies and CJ Calhoun’s soulful vocals. It’s a release set to introduce the world to the band’s exhilarating sound and astound listeners in the process.
