Elysia Biro releases her new single “Clever”

Today, critically acclaimed jazz-pop singer, songwriter and pianist Elysia Biro releases her new single “Clever” via Universal Music Canada and Deutsche Grammophon. A tender study of heartache, “Clever” moves with the unhurried elegance that has become a signature of Biro’s work; a style informed by a lineage of artists who make technical sophistication feel effortless. Biro counts Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, and Joni Mitchell among her formative influences, and “Clever” carries their ability to communicate through tone, space, and phrasing.

“It was important to me to match the intimacy of the instrumentation with how it was written - alone at the piano in my room in London,” shares Biro. “It starts that way and then slowly progresses, mirroring how I and the song have evolved since the day I wrote it.”

“Clever” presents Biro at her most quietly assured, pairing the sophistication of her soaring vocals with the striking depth of the song’s emotional centre. Its gently swaying pulse and understated arrangement leave generous space around her vocals, reminiscent of the harmonic language of jazz and emotional directness of a modern pop ballad.

“Clever is about someone who wants to be in your life but as soon as you accept them in, they no longer want to be around,” Biro shares. “It’s about that moment when you have the clarity of realizing exactly who that person is, and knowing you also now care for them. But there is a power in seeing that truth and a strength in knowing exactly who they (and you) are.”

At 26, Biro possesses both the perspective of her lived experience and the poise of a vocalist from another era. Crafting her signature jazz-pop sound by building each song around the core of a solo piano or jazz trio, her musicianship and emotional intelligence speak as readily to longtime jazz listeners as a new generation embracing the current wave of young artists bringing jazz and pop into closer conversation.

Expressive, elevated musicianship has defined Elysia Biro’s burgeoning career. Following the release of her critically acclaimed debut EP Running From Nothing, she has surpassed 7.6 million global streams and earned recognition from The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard Canada, CBC’s Q with Tom Power, Vulture’s Switched On Pop, Wonderland Magazine, CBC’s Commotion, Schön! Magazine and more. This year has also seen Biro connect with audiences across the UK, US, Europe and Canada, performing at prestigeous venues and festivals including Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, The Great Escape Festival, the Toronto International Jazz Festival, and the Montréal International Jazz Festival, among others.

Last week, Biro released her debut holiday EP, It’s Always Christmas With You. An elegant, timeless soundtrack for the closeness of the holiday season, the four-track collection brings her virtuosic musicianship and warm, soulful vocals to the original title track, “It’s Always Christmas With You” and three beloved holiday classics: “The Christmas Song (Cheery & Bright)”, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

About Elysia Biro:

At just 26 years old, Elysia Biro (pronounced Eh-lee-sha Bee-row) is a compelling virtuoso whose swift rise and critical acclaim has landed her at the forefront of artists emerging in the jazz-pop space. Raised in the wilds of Vancouver Island and classically trained in piano since age 4, Biro is a technically gifted singer, songwriter, and pianist. At 13, inspired by the genre’s improvisational free form, she taught herself how to play jazz by ear and began writing her own music. After graduating high school at 16, Biro earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies for piano and voice before moving to England to complete her Master’s of Music degree at the University of York.

Citing jazz and folk luminaries such as Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, and Joni Mitchell among her greatest influences, Biro honours both tradition and the possibilities that unfurl when exploring new forms. She’s crafted her signature sound by building each song around the core of a jazz trio or solo piano, blending modern pop form and classical technique with jazz sensibilities. Much like her contemporaries Laufey and Olivia Dean, Biro’s music is resonating with younger audiences yearning for expressive artistry in the form of jazz-and-classical-inspired pop music. Now based in Los Angeles where she writes, records, and produces, Elysia Biro continues to combine worlds, creating sonic sanctuaries defined by her skilled musicianship and emotional depth.
